Does anyone know of a good source to order lots of batiks from?

Jim's Gem 02-11-2009 07:53 PM

Hancocks of Paducah has a lot of batiks. I think e-quilter has a lot as well.

farscapegal 02-12-2009 03:49 AM

I use this place. www.batiksplus.com/index.asp

And this place has some too. www.thousandsofbolts.com/index.cfm

And this one www.batiks.com/

A word of warning on batiks...

We had one come thru the studio that was used for a back (quilted by one of the other girls). The fabric was such a tight weave that the needles didn't go between the threads, it broke the threads.

The top maker ended up taking the whole thing apart and finding another back.

I took the fabric to our longarm guild meeting. They put it on a different machine. Same result. The verdict was - it was the fabric.

I LOVE batiks. But after this experience, I'm very careful about what I buy. Now....what to do about that stash.... probably make a quilt!

Hi HMK!!! (SMILING)

Batik Plus is where I ordered some of my HOFFMAN (is the best for me) and their service was excellent!

Ladyhawke520 02-12-2009 09:15 PM

Elle, I have to agree, thats the best excuse for spending money.... And I will look this weekend and see what kind of damage I can do...

BellaBoo 02-13-2009 05:47 AM

Batiks are perfect for fabric folding. I made a lot of fabric folded flower blocks and the ones made from batiks held the shape much better then the ones made from regular cotton fabric.

Marshall Dry Goods in Batesville, Arkansas. They have a web site. If you call their 8 hundred number ask for Pat. He will give you a better price the an listed. The material is top of the line.(They make it there) You will be pleased.

BellaBoo 02-14-2009 08:50 AM

Thanks for all your help.

I still need to locate about 4 of the fabrics I want but did manage to give the credit card a good workout at Batiks Plus, Today's Quilting and a LQS. This pattern is paper pieced, 104 x 104 and takes 17 different batiks - can't wait to get started.

#1piecemaker 02-14-2009 11:16 AM

No. I live in Ashdown. I wish I did live closer. Well maybe not. I'd be broke all the time. One of my quilting ladies is planning a trip for March. She plans on taking a van and loading up. I ordered one of there 3 bundle deals not too long ago so I have material for umpteen quilts. I get my batting from there too. It is such a good deal. You can't beat it. You get two big rolls for 70.00. There is enough to do over 20 quilts in it. It is the thick stuff too. The material is good quality material. A woman that works at a resturant in Wicks put me on to them.

My weaknest "Batiks" I have a very large stash of Batiks so beautiful I hate to cut them. I found "Bighornquilts.com to have a great supply of Batiks.

Shorebird 02-14-2009 05:07 PM

You folks need to come to the Finger Lakes. The Mennonite stores have absolutely NO character but they have amazing fabrics and the prices are unbelieveable. There are two w/in 30 minutes of me. One is a general store (no foods, but everything from stationery to underwear to pots and pans) with a fabric corner. The other used to be Hoovers Shoes, but recently changed their name. Probably b/c she sells more fabric than shoes. They still have the shoes, as well as bonnets & hats, but more fabric than ever. Golden something or other now.

Fabric is about $5.50/yard and is includes all of the usual manufacturers - Moda, Thimbleberries, Lakeshore, Benartex, etc.

Both stores have lots of batiks. Want to come? Maybe we can do a little shop hop and a miniature horse showing of sorts. Come on, Karla, let's get them here for a visit!

Terry, your such a bright spot, bet your hubby is the easy going, laid back kind. Who's going to be doing all that driving? :D

Mousie 02-15-2009 06:18 PM

oh, I was going to say ty, ty, ty HMK for asking this. I will be needing some batiks soon and I did not know that they have a tighter weave. I will definitely be picking them out in person so I can 'feel'. Also, it was pointed out to me, to 'open' fabric up, bc with batiks, the colors can be all different as you unroll bolt. good thing to know.

Wanda Holbrook 02-15-2009 06:56 PM

I have bought from Batiks.com when I lived in VA and could shop there in person. They have a good supply of fabrics and will ship to you.

Good luck,

Wanda

Erika"s in.South Bend, In. she has wonderful fabrics. She has online sales.

MsSage 02-16-2009 10:14 AM

I have found Fabric Shack has the lowest prices. $5.98 a yard most others are $9

Mousie 02-16-2009 08:15 PM

ty for that MsSage. Do you find the batiks to change much as you unroll? Can only see one small part online. Maybe I should buy a little and get the 'experience'.

Yogie 02-18-2009 03:06 PM

I often order my batiks at www.batiksplus.com
They have good sales from time to time.Try it!
Good luck
:-)

There's an ebay store I've purchased from a number of times. Least expensive Hoffmann's I've every seen and nice service.

Try this link: http://search.ebay.com/search/search...fsop=32&fsoo=2

If that doesn't work, the seller is smithville_ohio. You should see the Balis at $4.99!

NAYY, just a pleased customer.
