Why are some batiks so stiff even after pre-washing?? Is this related to the quality of the fabric?

Batik fabric is a higher thread count than most quilting cottons, so it's a bit 'crisper' to start with. Lots of dye adds to the stiffness of some, and I've found that sometimes it seems like the wax hasn't been totally washed out, I prewash in hot water.

I don't think all batiks are created equal..........JMO.........

Love batiks, but agree that sometimes that continue to be stiff after washing, even after several times. Any suggestions to soften them up? Have tried washing several times and adding fabric softener.

Ay ideas?

Batiks made in India (often found at big box stores) are just not the same quality as those found in quilt shops. That does not mean you cannot use them--but may contribute to the stiffer hand.

Now, that makes sense. I'm going to try that the next time I get a batik!

Yes, I agree that batiks are normally much denser. I usually change my normal cotton needle when sewing them.

I find it depends on the manufacturer. and like all fabrics not all batiks are created equal.

I too agree with the fact that not all are equal. I have been very lucky that nearly all of mine have been fairly soft.

It's the wax and the dye. I have soaked a few in fabric softener just to get them to soften up.

I agree that different brands feel different. I really like Hoffman and it washes up nice and soft.

Definitely the brands make a different. Also, where they are made: Indonesia, India, or Africa. The African ones seem to have more wax left in than the others.
