What batting do you use for a baby's quilt? Is there a fire-retardent batting?

Warm & Safe as does Quilter's Dream makes one that's fire-retardent . . .but I've never used it so can't vouch for the quality.

I wouldn't worry about the type of batting. According to the latest info from SIDS.org babies should have NOTHING in their beds with them and that includes blankets and bumper pads. I worked with high risk families and several of their babies over the years were suffocated due to blankets and bumper pads. I think baby quilts should all have a warning on the label and the sids.org website. Parents especially grandparents need to be educated. We sure don't want to loose a precious child due to something like this. By the way even tho babies suffocate they still call it sids.

She's right about the newest information being not to put anything in the crib.

I still make baby quilts, however, because they are so useful for other things - putting them on the floor or the ground to let the baby play, taking along for the baby to nap on in church, etc.

I put poly batting in most of my baby quilts, partly because it is very durable to wash and can be quilted more widely than most cotton battings, but partly also because I have a lot of poly batting that was given to me free.

I agree quilts are a fun thing for babies, Now with the back to sleep campaign they recommend lots of tummy time on the floor. That is a wonderful use for a colorful baby quilt.

Yes, my sister told me that she loved the quilt I made for my nephew for "tummy time". They had all-wood floors, so it offered more padding than just a blanket. And he liked all the colors.
