batting and backing
 

I have a question wondering if you could use a warm and natural batting and then use quilted material on the back if it would be warmer that way or would you just use double layer of batting or maybe one batting and one flannel any suggestions would be appreciated.

That's a good question. I'm wondering what it would look like after a washing or two? If it were me, I'd do the double layer of identical batting. Other folks on the QB swear by the wool batting but I have never used one. I used the warm and natural on a couple of quilts and although I like the look and they are wearing well, they just aren't warm enough for the kind of winters we have here in central New York. Keep in mind, I sleep on a heated water bed and have wicked hot flashes and I'm still saying this.

You can do either.. I've used warm & natural and poly to give it warmth and fluff...

I've used dbl layer or warm n natural.. Kinda hard to quilt thru tho- so if your going to LA it ask your long armer if they can quilt dbl layer..

Try making a quilt out of wool, even a scrapy wool quilt. I have a wool quilt that I call my ugly quilt. I only use it in the winter and it's between the other quilts. It doesn't even have batting in it. Also I have a flannel quilt that's flannel on both sides. That one is prettier than the wool. Both are very warm.

You can use two layers. Soft and bright is poly and that one is a little warmer. I tried to stay away from poly batting for a long time, but I do have to say that I do like that one alot.

I like a layer of Warm and Natural and a layer of poly for warmth , and it gives it a bit of extra puff. I would not want to quilt it myself on a regular machine... but do check with your Long Arm pro if she/he will do it. I used to work with one that would not. Notice I said 'used to "...

I would just use a double layer of batting and tie it.

I wouldn't use the pre-quilted fabric as a backing. For one thing, it is usually pretty expensive, and for another the new quilting lines will be fighting with the quilting lines already on that backing. I think it would be better to use two layers of batting, and/or a flannel backing.

All I can say is...I'll never use 2 layers of W&N again in my lifetime. But then, I hand quilt so it may be different for you. The quilt itself was lovely and warm. I just won't hand-quilt 2 layers of that again!

Sounds like you might want to use the flannel with wool batting. I bet that would be super cozy and warm!
