Batting for Charity Quilts
 

What type of batting do you use for charity quilts? I use my long arm for quilting them.

I always use Warm and Natural.

I would use a batting that can take a lot of washing, so I would go with some king of polyester...and depending on how your finances are they are less expensive than cotton or cotton blends. And it also depends on how many you make. I worked for a non-profit that made comforters for charity for overseas use and local disasters, and used a 12 oz. Hobbs poly but these were tied, and you say you longarm them they would probably be too "puffy" for the machine. I would probably go with Quilters Dream poly, they have a good selection.

100% cotton, warm and natural

I use poly batting, I don't have tons of money to spend on cotton batting for donation quilts.

for personal use, and/or hand quilting, I use quilters dream "request"

I use warm and natural for my own, but the price (high double figures) has gotten way out of hand to use for about 40 kids charity quilts, and don’t like puffy poly with long arm quilting. Looking for other options.

I order from Walmart.com a roll of Pellon Quilters Touch Polyester Batting. It is very good quality, not to thick. It is 90 inches by 30 yards for about 77 dollars and pick it up at the store so no freight. I highly recommend it.

Do you have space for a batting roll? Marshall Dry Goods carries Hobbs 80/20, 96" x 30 yards for $110 + shipping. If that is too much for you, maybe you could split the cost with some other quilters.

I have room for a roll and is the way I buy batting. I’ll check out Hobbs brand.

Warm and white is my choice for charity quilting. It's not puffy and my Gammil likes it. It's all poly and durable.:thumbup:

I use the Pellon 80/20 for all my quilts. Honestly I can't tell the difference between it and Hobbs once it's in the quilt and the Pellon is a better price.

I’m confused! My warm and white package says it’s cotton.....

Maybe another option would be flannel. Definitely would have to pre wash. I have made quilts with flannel as batting because they come out thinner and in CA, it's perfect. My aunt always uses flannel in the middle of her quilts also. The quilting isn't as noticeable as warm & natural batting or the fluffy batting.

I just ordered a roll from Walmart and it cost me $61.64 delivered to my door. The difference between pickup and delivery was $1 plus 20 cents, I think. I cannot drive to store for that amount. Saves a trip.

Thanks for this information. I just ordered a roll of this. I make a lot of charity quilts and this is good to know. I have been using 80-20 Hobbs batting & it is very expensive.

I purchased a roll of W&N a few years ago and still have a bit left on it that I will use for charity quilts. I have since purchased a new roll of Hobbs and will use it on personal quilts.

I belong to a quilt club whose "mission" is to make charity quilts We use an 80/20 blend. Keeps everyone happy.

We are making over 200 charity quilts every year for World Relief. We are using Poly Batting 60" wide. Is there any good companies to buy big Rolls at a reasonable price ? The Batting we are getting is not very good. Too many thin and thick places. Thanks for any info.

I’m making children’s charity quilts and I’m going to use flannel. I got a whole bolt at Joann’s with a 60% off coupon. They want something to cuddle with and I think this will be perfect.

No matter what you use check out prices on Marshalls dry goods. You do pay freight but they are good sized rolls I got one 90x30yds and I can hardly move it around.

I don't know why you don't like puffy poly batting with longarm quilting. I personally like puffy quilts and have no difficulty quilting with puffy poly batting on my longarm at all. It can appear quite 'flat' while on the table but puffs back up when it is relaxed after taking off the table.

I know that the Charity group in my club uses polyester and I believe the QOV group I belong to uses Warm n Natural or Polyester. It becomes a personal and economic choice like the others are saying.

I second the comment that Warm and White is cotton.

I usually piece together all kinds of odds and ends of battings. I don't long arm the quilts though.

Janice, I also order a roll of batting from Walmart. Cotton and polyester, 60 inches wide, I think 20 yards for $45. and they ship it to my home for free. I could pick it up from the store but finding it on my front porch is so much more convenient. Of course, if your charity quilts are larger (mine are 40-45 x 50-55) then go with the roll that Texas Sunshine suggested.

This is a good question...I find batting so expensive. I read a quilter state that the polyester batting is abrasive and wears out the fabric . It acts like steel wool against the fabric. So I quit using it. I will investigate the Pelon brand .
To purchase new flannel is expensive here too. Canada.

Puffy poly batting shifts while you are long arm quilting. I suppose that I could get good results after enough attempts to do it, buy who needs the headache?

So far, Marshall Dry goods has the best price (that I know of) for it.

I also make a lot of charity quilts, so understand the cost issue with batting. Try Marshall Dry goods. I pay $110 + shipping for a 96' x 30 yard roll of Hobbs 80/20. It quilts up very well.

I believe Warm and Natural is unbleached cotton batting and Warm and White is bleached cotton batting.
Soft and Bright is Warm Company's polyester batting that can be quilted farther apart and is NOT fluffy. I like working with it. Joann's sells it at the regular price of $10/yard in our store (90" wide). Last week they had a coupon for 60% off batting by the yard, which brings that price down to a more reasonable level.

I use the Hobbs charity program as mentioned above for both the 80/20 and the polyester batting. I am very happy with them.

Thank you all for your efforts to help others. I recently heard something that really touched me. They referred to such quilts as "Comfort Quilts" I think that gives the recipient more dignity, don't you?
BTW, I usually use Warm and Natural bought from Joann's with coupons. Some Michael's also have it.

I buy the Pellon Polyester batting from Walmart.com. I buy the rolls that are about 9 1/2 yards long---under $30 last time I bought it.

I read that too and don't believe a word of it. I have mainly used polyester batting since I started quilting about 50 or 51 years. Poly batting is soft and used in pillows. Not everyone is truthful.

I have used warm & warm and poly batting for donation quilts. My Daughter and I buy our own quilting supplies. I am going to check out walmart.com.
