Batting Dust
 

Asking for help to determine if anyone is using a small air purifier in their sewing "cave" and if so, are you finding effective?
I am slowly converting to poly or poly/blend batting, but in meantime trying to use up the cotton variety. I want to make a good selection if I buy a purifier.

even is you use only poly bat you'll still have lint from thread and fabric. I don't use a purifier but have switched out my carpet for laminate flooring that I can run a swifter type mop over after each project.

You're going to have dust and lint no matter what type of fiber you use, it's just the nature of the beast. I have a HEPA filter on my furnace that helps to keep dust down, and run a dehumidifier in my sewing studio in the basement to keep the moisture level down, to avoid mustiness. But dust and lint is the least of my worries.

Welcome to the QB from SE Michigan! Our purifier is on the furnace unit but there is still dust just about everywhere. The batting draws dust to it on the large rolls that I have here. I don't know if I have a solution. What I do have to do is wash each quilt when it is finished to insure that the dust is pulled out.

We have the filters in our system as well.
I am researching table top purifiers for my "happy place" (sewing room).
Carpet to laminate on our wish list as well.
In the meantime, I dust and vacuum regularly, so keeping it under control.

I put the batting in the dryer on air for about 15 minutes. Shake out quilt and clean lint filter (you'll be surprised at the amount). I usually repeat about 3 more times. It really helps the lint factor and 'sneezing'.

Good reminder - thanks! I have done that to remove the folds/wrinkles of the batt. Will remember to do that next time as well.
Even with the dust factor, I love - love - love machine quilting on my Bernina 350PE and plan an upgrade in the coming year to a 770QE (for more throat space), so will continue to do the best to keep the allergens at bay. With retirement in the mix as well in under a year, machine quilting is more economical for me. Will use my wonderful longarm friend for those too big for me to wrestle.
