Batting for Flannel Quilt
 

Hi--
I asked this before but it has not appeared and still would like to know what you use for batting when both quilt layers are flannel. It seems to me that most battings would make the quilt too heavy for the baby. I never thought about this until recently. Have always used batting before but am now wondering if I can get by without using anything. What has been your experience? I have given many baby quilts and no one every told me that the quilt was unusable. But perhaps they were just being polite.

I used cotton in an all flannel baby quilt and it was very heavy. I would use poly if I did it again. Or maybe a piece of fleece in the middle. What does anyone think of that? I know I have used fleece on the back and others have used flannel on the back. This would turn it around. Probably a think poly would work to quilt nicely with some definition.

You could use a layer of flannel for the batting!!!! I don't think that would make it too heavy for a baby. Or you could skip the batting all together as 2 layers of flannel will be pretty warm. However, if you pieced the top, I think using a layer of flannel for the batting would keep you from feeling all the seams.

I think it all depends on where you live climate wise. Up north I would use the cotton. Warmer climate maybe just the front and backing in flannel. Temp would be my decisive factor.

I have used flannel as batting in a flannel quilt and it worked fine. Also used warm and natural and that worked fine too. Both quits went to Washington state and the grandkids like them.

I would use the Morning Glory Low Loft polyester batting you can get at WalMart. It is very light weight and quilts up very nicely.

I use Thermore Batting. It is very lightweight poly. It will not beard or migrate. You can quilt as far as 8 inches apart. The drape is wonderful and I find it to be very warm and lightweight--just right for a baby quilt.
I have used in clothing, quilted wall hangings, and baby quilts.

I agree with the previous post. For quilts in Florida, I've not used any batting or just a piece of flannel. Quilts for Wisconsin get the heavier W&N.
