Batting for heavy quilt
 

My SIL likes the feel of a heavy quilt to sleep under. What would you recommend? Thanks..

are you tying this quilt. how about wool or just two layers of cotton. I live on Long Island, NY and use just one layer of poly batt, if it goes below 0*, then we put two quilts on. it's warm enough for us. it's hard to quilt thru 2 layers of batt.

I love a heavy quilt too, so I am curious for the answers you get. I have made a t-shirt quilt that I put 3" denim sashing and then put a polar fleece backing on...that got heavy. I've also made denim quilts for my kids and they were on the heavy side...but denim isn't always the answer. Good luck on your answer.

The heaviest quilt we've made had fleece on the back and W & N batting. It is warm and heavy!

I have quilted quilts for a lady who wanted one Warm and Natural batt and a high lost poly batt in the same quilt. It was heavy but it quilted very nicely. She likes heavy quilts. My long arm handled it beautifully.

I made a quilt for my nephew that is pretty heavy. It has a flannel backing, a flannel batting, and the top is pieced flannel.

TARTAN....That is exactly what I started doing for my son! It's at a stand still now because I thought it might be fun to make the squares from family members of his and his girlfriend...if they ever decide to get married. haha an engagement might happen over this winter...so now I can maybe pull that quilt back out to complete.

Warm & Plush, without a doubt (100% cotton, no scrim, no visible seeds). I'm getting the supplies to make my own suspension arm for my sewing table because it is also really heavy to have to be pushing & pulling through my machine to FMQ, but it feels really wonderful. I, too, love heavy quilts. I seriously want to steal my 3-year old niece's lap quilt away from her. :p

I only make crib & lap quilts, so I can't attest to how miserable it might be to try to FMQ a King quilt with this batting, but if you're willing to deal with the weight when quilting, that's what I'd recommend.

I made a cathedral window quilt with Hobbs warm and natural. This was heavy because of the top many layers. No problem with quilting.

I made a quilt using batiks for the top, a layer of W&N wool batting, a layer of flannel for batting, and then flannel for the backing. It is very heavy and very warm (delightful)!

I use W&N batting all the time and everyone says how heavy the quilts are...and they are even with just regular quilting cotton fabric. Add flannel as a backing and even heavier and warmer!

I just done a levi 10 minute quilt with one layer of batting and a cotton back and it is very heavy. I also have a levi quilt eith 2 layers of batting and it is even heavier.

I always thought that W&N was heavy compared to Hobbs 80/20. But then I have lived most of my life in So CA.

If she wants a heavy quilt, double the batt and then tie the quilt. It will go quicker and will be very warm.

Does she really like the weight or is it the warmth? I have been using a Hobbs Heirloom Wool batting and a Bamboo or Bamboo/Cotton batting together. It is warm, but not so much weight.

This is my suggestion, also. Quilter's Dream is my preferred batting overall. Various lofts according to the project. I used the Supreme loft in a quilt for my 7 YO grand-daughter and a flannel backing. I did FMQ on my home sewing machine. It was heavy and makes a nice warm quilt.

It is the weight more so than the warmth.

I have a pieced flannel quilt made with warm and natural batting and a flannel back. It is king size and it weighs a ton.

If it's the weight go with flannel, maybe as a backing. I made a flannel rag quilt from 3 layers of flannel and it's very heavy compared to any of my quilts with a cotton top and back and layer of cotton batting.

My great grandmother used old wool army blankets for batting. I don't know how she acquired them, they were stamped U.S. Calvary - she worked as a seamstress before she got married and was very resourceful when it came to using hat she had to make something she needed. She lived in Kansas, Oklahoma and Colorado where you need very warm bedding. She lived from 1875 to 1961. When I was little and stayed with her in Burlington KS I loved using those quilts.

I made a twist and shout and it is really heavy I mean heavy!!!!

I wanted the loft to accent the quilting on Summer in the Park (Missouri star pattern) I used two layers of Warm and Crafty (I think that was the name of it. purchased as a whole bolt at JoAnns) It is a low loft poly that was pretty compact. That quilt is pretty heavy. I like it, but I am glad its just a lap quilt.
