Batting help fora first time quilter?!?
 

I bought batting on a roll, and it it very thin. It came on the roll folded over. Am I supposed to double up when I make the quilt, or do I unfold it and leave it one thickness. I've been reading many sites and no one seems to have the answer. It is Natures Touch by Pellon from Joann. So help would be greatly appreciated.

The thinness of the batting is what is called loft. Most use one layer. Cotton tend to be thinner than polyester batting, so if you want a more full puffy looking batting you would go poly or cotton poly blend. You can use 2 layers if you want but some thin battings when quilted can have quite a bit of weight to them. Hobbs 80/20 has a nice dimension to it without being to thick. The batting you chose is very similar to war and natural.

The batting I use is Quilter's Dream Request. It is very thin also, but it makes really nice quilts. If you like a thicker quilt, you can use it double or add another layer of a different kind of batting. It just depends on the look you like. Welcome to the Quiltboard. I have used Nature's Touch by Pellon. This is very similar in weight to Warm and Natural. Both are needlepunched through scrim. Personally, I would never double this batting because the quilt will become more stiff and more heavy.

Again, personally, I prefer thin and supple quilts (like the vintage/antique quilts). These were/are made with thin cotton batting. The "comforter" look is much newer and came in with polyester batts.
