I don't see any problem using the towels. Anything for padding that is 100% cotton should work just fine.

There are now a couple of special battings called "Warm-n-Zap" by Pellon or "Warm Tater" by Warm n Natural. I would think a towel would get soggy from the moisture.

Whatever you use it has to be 100% cotton--the fabric, thread and batting.

Thanks Bearisgray. That was my thought also. However I wasn't sure if the special batting had some heat absorbing qualities that I wasn't aware of and needed to add it.

I wouldn't think the towel fabric would be any worse than the fabric or batting.

Insulbrite is good for potholders but NOT for anything used in a microwave.

I only warm my bowl of food and then put it into the holder. Old terry cloth would be great for keeping the food warm. It also makes good padding for pot holders and table mats. I prefer it to the insulbrite, since you need additional batting anyway.

why?

Definitely Do Not Use Insulbrite in them.

thanks, should have scrolled down further for the answer. I understand now.

the insulbrite has metal in it. it will spark in the microwave. others have already stated that. you must use 100% cotton throughout. poly thread might melt.
