batting or not....

Hi I am making a quilt for a baby and have the top finished ... I would like to use minky or something soft like it for the backing, my question is do I use batting or not? I am going to just do some large FMQ to hold it all together...any help on this would be great ...Thanks

I have a minky quilt that is front and back minky that i did not put a batting into. but if the front wasnt minky I would still use a batting or a Fleece. I've done a lot of baby quilts with fleece as the batting lately.

If you're going to use minky for the backing, I wouldn't bother with a batting. Of course I know you're in Illinois is the baby in the Midwest also? Then maybe a light loft.

I've been curious about blanket batting/ batting alternatives a for awile now. What considerations do you need to take when quilting. Obviously your fleece doesn't come with distance between stitches and all he other useful information that goes into choosing batting. What are the advantages and disadvantages?

I have never used minky ... however have done one quilt with fleece as the backing, and no batting.

It is plenty warm enough, because the polyester of the fleece does not allow it to breathe!
A bonus is that it is quite warm, but very light in weight.

YES, I would do it again!

If you haven't tired to quilt with Minky, you better check out the previous posts on the difficulty that occurs when doing ANY quilting with that fabric. It is very stretchy in all directions.

I used a flannel and tied it instead of quilting it and it turned out very nice.

Thank you everyone, I guess I will put a light weight batting as it for a baby here in Ill and it does get pretty cold here.

I don't know what I will do about the stretching of the backing but will try doing anyway and I will just have go slow and hope it comes out ok.. Thanks everyone for your help.. always can count on you girls to help me out..your the greatest...

I have done both ways on the LA with and without batting.

When minky first came out, I bought quite a bit. But the first time I sewed with it, I had all kinds of trouble. Quilting (sewing) is suppose to be relaxing and fun (even though it's not always) and I just couldn't sew easily with the minky, so I gave it away to a second hand store. All of it. And I'm glad I did. I'm amazed at anyone who dare sew with minky. More power to them!!
