I'm really happy that I've just finished the 90x90 top for my Mum and Dad's quilt, and have bought the backing yesterday.

I now have the dilema of what to do for the batting. Do I use the several 20/30inch x 90 strips that I have left over from other quilts and sew them together, or should I wait, (I must now save up again) and buy a whole square for their quilt with no joins?

What would you do? I feel like I should buy a whole, but want to get on with it and feel rather guilty by thinking I could use up the strips. Is it frugal, true patchwork quilting or me being cheap in thinking about this?

It's took a while to get to this stage as my Mum was a bit of a pest when it come to picking fabric  :D so I don't want to spoil it.

Any suggestions will be gratefully accepted.
Joanne

i'd use what i have on hand.

surely Mum isn't petty or mean enough to take the quilt apart to inspect the innards.

Use your leftover strips. I do it all the time and can't tell any difference. Join them with a large zig-zag stitch.

if you have enough strips to be plenty, by all means use them, lay them side by side, zigzag them together, once the quilt is quilted only you will know. it's nice to have a new batt but when you don't we all make due as needed, that is a tradition of quilting. RECYCLE use everything possible
and enjoy. :)

lol, No, she's far from mean... she's one wonderful person.

And that's what my dilema is, she's also always been one frugal Mum when we were kids. Do I follow her ways in this or splash out.

I may be just over-thinking this! :)

follow her ways and be frugal, it is a compliment to her.

I have joined batting strips for two large quilts and had no problems at all. If you have enough to piece it together then I would say do it! Frugality is a rare virtue these days.

Do what your heart tells you to do - - -

Even though the pieced batting will work (if it's all the same kind) - sometimes it's important for one's soul to have a "new" or "whole" piece -

I'm not sure why this is so, but it is -

Maybe it's in the same category as knowing whether or not one's underwear has holes in it or not -

Thank you all for your advice. I'll be frugal and join the strips together this afternoon and follow Mum's ways.

Then tomorrow I can clear the room and get on with sandwiching and quilting it together.

:)

Go ahead and use what you have.
