Batting by the Roll Width
Is 96" width a good size for batting by the roll?
I've finally run out of the batting I bought at Joann's way back when we could still go over the border and didn't measure it before I used the last bit awhile ago. There is a good price on a 96" roll here in Canada with free shipping but I want to be sure it's what I need. Thanks! Watson |
Watson, I think the next size up would probably be 120" which would be a king. If you can look on a pkg queen size that would help you know if 90" would be what you would get more use.

Last year I bought a roll of queen size Quilter's Dream Request batting that was 93" by I-forget-how-many yards long. So yes...I would say it's a good size.

I buy pellon 90" wide, and am very happy with the size, works for me.

I think it would be dependent on the size quilts you typically make.

Hobbs 80/20 white comes in a 108" wide.
I usually buy 96" wide by the roll. My favorite is Winline 80/20 Comfort Blend. |
I bought the 96" Hobbs from Dinkydoo here in BC last year. I haven't had to piece any backing yet and I usually do full size quilts. I had the choice of the wider but it was more expensive and this was the first time I purchased a roll....I am happy with it.

yes..it really depends on what sized quilts you like to make.....but 96 is a good basic size....you want to have extra for for the sides so you can make about a 90 inch wide by whatever length quilt you want. I have made some quilts that are wider than my 96 inch batting...but I actually bought a roll of 120 wide batting and found that I did not like having to trim it down when I did smaller quilts....so what I find is a good idea...is to have both sizes....tee hee....anyway, I am lucky in that I have a second floor that I use mainly for storage of fabric and batting....I have two old dining room chairs with slat backs and have then turned back to back and have my batting roll hanging on an old shower rod. It looks like a giant roll of toilet paper.... It is easy to switch out the batting rolls. I use a long piece of wood trim to mark a chalk line on the batting roll after I measure how much I want to cut off the roll. Works good. just have to be careful to not stretch the batting when measuring it. I have been dreaming of getting a roll of wool batting....but I do have a roll of hobbs polydown and a roll of hobbs 80/20 and not that many tops to do for a bit so will wait on that for a bit.

depends on the size quilts you make but if most would work with that size I say go for it--you can always purchase a Q or K if needed on a quilt. I have a roll of 120 Hobbs 80/20; 90" Hobbs 80/20 and 108" white Hobbs 80/20--I just hate to have the left overs of using a 120" when I really only need a 90".

For me it's a great size, I make throw or twin size quilts. I use the 96 for the length. I can then just cut enough for the width of the quilt off of the roll. I have a little left over at the bottom.

For me it depends on what size quilt I normally make. Most of mine are around 105 so I buy the 120" x 30yd Quilter's Dream. The scraps I tape together to make another batting the size I need for the next quilt. Or I use the pieces for placemats, embroidered quilt blocks, etc. Not much finds its way into the trash bin at my house.

where is everyone getting their batting rolls. I keep looking but most sure charge a lot for shipping.

I too like 96" wide batting. Wal Mart has been my go to and can buy 80/20 pellon 96" x 9 yards on a bolt. The bolts are a bit easier for me to store and I like to have 2 full ones on hand and one in use. I have paid as little as $35 and just purchased another bolt with free shipping for around $40. It is so much fun to have batting on hand and I never thought that would be a "thing" for me but it is!

I've never bought batting by the roll but I just did a major cleanup of my sewing room and couldn't believe all the battings I had! I got rid of some that require quilting 1-2 inches apart. I must have had them a very long time.
|
I usually buy the 120" roll, because most of the quilts I make are lap size, and I can get two out of each width.

I believe 96 is pretty good. The only thing I foresee is if you are LA'ing a quilt you need to be sure to leave enough on the sides for the machine. Great faor Queen size quilt.

I just looked...Quilter's Dream is drop-shipped and shipping is included in the price. They also sell Hobbs, but shipping is not included for that brand. |

I prefer to buy the 96" wide roll, and then buy a few packages of King size for the few times I make a king quilt. I use to buy rolls at 120", and I'd always cut it the the smaller dimension. IE if I had a quilt 70*90 I'd cut the batting at 80" (70+10) and rotate it, but then I'd still have a chunk on the bottom I'd be cutting off (about 80*30) and I'd save them and put them together and use them up later.
That was a bit of a drag, and now that I buy narrower batting, I don't have near the scraps left over. |
I use Hobbs 80/20 batting and I think I can purchase 108" wide. I agree with everyone that it really depends on what size quilts you make.

Thanks, everyone...I did buy the 96" roll. Free delivery.
For Canadians, I got it at Dinky-Doo and it is 1/2 price right now. Hobbs Heirloom 80/20, 30 yds. Pre-order for March delivery. That should last me awhile! Watson |
I have purchased 90" rolls of batting. But if I can afford it the next roll will be wider - 120" if I can find
yes there will be left overs but I use the left overs pieced together for Quilts for Kids quilts... works really well |
Does Hobbs 80/20 look more like Cotton Batting with poly for softness, I use on long arm
