Batting Sale from Connecting Threads ??
 

I love Connecting Threads. I always stock up when their batting is on sale.. 30% off is a good deal in mho. I usually buy Hobbs heirloom 80/20. Last time I ordered Natural cotton with scrim because I can quilt up to 8 inches apart. I have not used Hobbs Poly-down batting, which can be quilted at 6 in., because I keep thinking I want cotton. However the price for a queen size poly down batting at the 30% off is only $16.09. What are you thoughts on poly down batting? Have you used this brand before? and how does it quilt? Thanks in advance for your response. I always come here first. Best advice for quilting on the planet!

Do you hand quilt or machine quilt?

I machine quilt on a longarm. I like Polydown. It gives great definition to the quilting. It is very cost effective. But I don't think it has very nice drape. My favorite cuddle quilt has W&N in it and was simply quilted with a 2" cross hatch grid on my domestic. So maybe the combination of cotton batting, the fact this quilt is older and has seen many washings and the fairly sparse quilting is what makes it such a wonderfully scrunchy nap quilt.

Cons of polydown are
It is a synthetic and a lot of people don't like that
it can be slippery so if you quilt on a domestic you have to make sure you baste really well as it can slip around some (I don't know if it can be spray basted, I assume it can)
Until the quilt is fairly well "broken in" the drape is not very supple.

Pros
It is extremely cost effective
It gives great definition to the quilting
It is comfortable to sleep under (at least in my experience)
Edited to add it is extremely easy to launder as the batting is light weight and dries really fast.
Also it makes for a much lighter weight quilt than cotton or 80/20 which could be a pro to some people and con to others.

80/20 is also very nice and a batting I use regularly and find just as nice as cotton only with a tiny bit more loft for definition of quilting stitches.

I used polydown for my king sized quilt. It worked very well.

Your quilts are beautiful and your quilting is wonderful. My quilting will be much more plain. Just don't have the skills that make the quilting so wonderful.

Cotton gives a quilt a more crinkled look after washing. The Poly down gives the quilt a smoother appearance.

I recently went to Michael and discovered they have Hobbs 80/20 queen size batting at a great price, under $20. They also have a good poly, Loops and Thread that is very good. I purchased a queen size that with my 50% coupon was less than $10. For some reason I never thought of Michael's for batting.

I prefer the 80/20 to poly. I think it is easer to bind than the poly, and I like a heavier quilt.

I hate doing fmg on poly batting. It can be very bulky.

Great info thanks everyone. One more thing I just read on the natural cotton batting I have. It states not to use it with very light and white fabrics because of natural oils in the cotton which can darken and cause spots on the lighter and white fabric. It's ok on medium and darker fabrics. Has anyone experienced this before? I've quilted for years, it's rather strange to be so concerned at this stage of the game but I have a stack of flimsies I've decided to tackle, sigh.

I was just looking over a quilt this weekend that I made in 2013 with Hobbs 80/20 natural. It has a lot of white fabric, but I saw no signs of darkening or discoloration. I was looking pretty closely at the fabric (I love the quilt, but the white isn't wearing well). This isn't a particularly long trial, but I wouldn't worry too much.

CT also has wide backing fabric on sale. I have used this and it is wonderful.

I am currently waiting on a roll of Pellon 80/20 batting to get here from Walmart, its 96" wide by 30 yards at $102 plus tax. Thought it was a great deal and shipped direct to house.

That is a great deal! Please let us know what you think of the batting when you get it. Also for those that want to save on the shipping costs I believe if you have it shipped to your local Walmart and pick it up there is no shipping charges. But it is very convenient to have a bulky roll of batting delivered to your door!

The shipping was free to the house. I am just finishing a bolt of the same type 80/20 but it was only 90" wide and love it, that i had gotten off a JoAnn's show on the tv. My local (35 miles away) quilt shop "The Covered Wagon" is quilting my tops with it.
