Batting to SID on large pieces
 

I ordered Hobbs cause everyone raves about it and just opened it. Says can stitch up to 3 1/2 inches and I am doing a large apple core. Going to SID around each one as I am not good at FMQ yet and it is a gift. Each core is 9 inches across and 6 inches across each curved end. That leaves a large unquilted area and dont want to stitch in the middle of them and ruin the look so is there a batting that allows for large areas. I hope I have not totally confused you.

Warm and Natural lets you quilt up to 10 inches apart. I use it a lot because I don't care for dense quilting. It is cotton and does have some shrinkage. If that is not a look you like, it can be preshrunk.

I use W&N as well. One reason is because of the distance it can be quilted, although I usually end up quilting much less than the 10" max. I do not preshrink the batting as I like the crinkled look of quilts.

Most of the Quilter's Dream lines of batting allow you to quilt up to 12" apart. Here is a chart so you can see which ones will allow that large of spacing. http://www.quiltersdreambatting.com/user-guide.htm

Another option is you could quilt the apple seeds inside the core or tie some french knots to suggest the seeds. This would require you to quilt inside the apple cores though.

I also use warm and natural a lot but you could use what you have and Echo quilt inside each Apple core to keep to the required spacing.

I guess you have to order quilters dream products on line. Can't find it locally at all. The apple cores have cars from the 20's to a current jaguar. Cool boy quilt. Thanks for the advice and the guide.

Warm and Natural is wonderful! You will be very happy with your project when you use this. I am not a dense quilter, and it works great for me.

I second the idea of echo quilting inside your apple cores. It doesn't have to be much, just one or two lines would suffice.

I have always preferred to use Hobbs of W&N because I still find little chunks of bark in their product. I like Tartan's idea of stitching a seed or two. You could also echo quilt a smaller apple in the center. I like the puffiness that Hobbs gives to display your quilting skills.
