Hello,

I am wondering about washing batting in a steam washer and dryer.

Washer: http://products.geappliances.com/App...ku=PFWS4605LMG

Dryer:

I have read lately that polyester batting melts with steam, Would that happen?

I want to have a nice medium warmth quilt and I do like puffy, but would also like it to last a generation or more. What batting would be best? They are for our bed.

Thanks!

I can not really comment on the batting question, I use Warm & Natural or wool batting no matter what. However, I would think that one would be able to turn the steam feature on or off depending on the items being washed and dried.

I can't imagine an instance where you would need to steam a quilt. I have a sanitary cycle on my front loader. The water gets super hot but I only use that for bath towels or kitchen towels.

Is it better to buy open or folded batting?

I buy whichever one is least expensive. With cotton, if it is folded then I just open it up and smooth it out to let it relax before I use it. Or sometimes I throw it into a warm dryer for a few minutes and then smooth it out over the table. I don't think that polyester batts hold a crease so it might not matter.

I buy W&N cotton batting on the bolt. It's folded. Never pre-wash my batting but do prewash my fabrics. It's not 'thick' per se but it is very warm per the recipients of my quilts! I like the fact that the natural fibers breathe more than synthetic fabrics and therefore have a tendency to be both warmer and cooler.
