Trying to use something I already have here. I don't have flannel. I have an older velour blanket that is very light in color and I also have one of those mattress covers that are made of something that feels sort of like batting. Is it possible to use that? This quilt will be tied, if that makes any difference.

how did they wash up? and do they lay flat?

I had a friend that tried to use an old, warped, baby blanket as batting. Definitely not an economical move. No way would it behave.

If they wash okay, they'd probably be okay to use.

Way back when, people put some of the oddest things in their utility quilts.

Thanks, bear, the blanket lays flat. The mattress cover is in a heap, I'd have to wash it and see how it behaves. I'm sure folks were very creative back in the day!

My thought when I saw your post is that I don't think I'd use the velour blanket. I have a couple older ones around here and there are little chunks of the velour coming off that reveals a sort of nylon webbing in the middle. I'd hate to have you put all that work in and have it get all "chunky" in the middle because of loose bits. If it were me, I'd probably go with the mattress pad. Just my $.02 :wink:

I think the mattress pad will be okay. IF the velour is of a color that doesn't show through, and the weave of the quilt fabric is tight enough, I might try the velour. I think I would try a small piece and put it together in a small doll blanket size, finish it and launder it and see what happens! If you like the results, go for it. You won't know until you try it! :lol:

I've use old mattress pads before for batting if work well for me in fact i still have the tied quilt.Also i have use some old velour blankets for batting in some throws still holding up good.Hope all goes well for u

Glad to hear this. I took a leap and used the mattress pad. I AM having a problem right now, though. When I stitch two pieces of fabric together as a test, my machine works fine. When I put the quilt top/backing/batting in, the bobbin thread heaps up on the underside and gets all jammed in the bobbin case. Looks horrific, lol. I'm very inexperienced, but it seems like the feed dogs are not moving. I compared the mattress pad to a piece of regular batting and the difference in thickness is minimal. What can I possibly do to remedy this?
