Batting for a Summer Quilt?
 

Hi-

I am in the process of making a queen sized quilt top for my mom..this will go on her bed for the summer. What kind of batting should I use? I want something that isn't too hot, but has a lot of loft. She likes "poofy" things. JC

Alot of my family has not used any batting at all. Just the top and backing.

if she wants a 'puffy' quilt surprising enough wool is wonderful- it is lightweight- lofty- and breaths= the quilt that lives on my bed in the summer is one with wool batting- it is not too warm-because it breaths and is so lightweight- some quilters pair wool with a cotton batt for heavier (winter) quilts.
another choice would be dream bamboo or dream orient.

Interesting you post this, I am making a summer lap quilt for my porch swing. I had understood a summer quilt has no batting, just the top and the back. Another way to do this, is to use a thin batting such as flannel. I am thinking of using flannel, but I do like the wool batting idea as well.

I have made 2 summer quilts, no batting, love them but they are not puffy.

I use a single layer of flannel - usually a neutral color. I do wash the flannel before using it to cut down on major shrinkage.

On the subject of flannel, I wash and dry 3 times before putting in a quilt EXCEPT when I want that antique look. If you want it to look old = don't wash the flannel.

Ckcowl is right about a wool batting, I agree with her. My absolute favorite quilt is not my prettiest by far, but is beloved for it's light weight, winter warmth/summer cool, and perfect loft; I rarely feel sweaty under it.

I've had to get a little part-time job so I can buy only wool batting from now on, LOL!

I've bought some wool battings, but how do I wash the quilts made with them?

Do they shrink up every time you wash them, or just the first time?
