batting
 

three days ago I went to Joann and bought some fiberfill batting . all the pre bagged batting was on sale for 40% off so I bought a middle priced one. I bought a High loft . so everything should have been fine went home and finished the quilt now I hand tied it . this quilt was a gift for a friend and I had been very careful with all my seems and not to spill my coffee on it (LOL) I desided to wash the quilt before I gave it to my friend and you guessed it the batting decenagrated I was so heart sick I took the quilt apart and there was just nothing there. So now I have to redo

Do you remember the brand name?? I have bought several and so far have not had any problems. Want to avoid that one!!

I believe the clue here is the word "fiberfill" To me that means something to stuff toys and animals and not quilt batting.

I Just found the bag it came in can you believe it the name was mountain mist it8s the first time ive had trouble with any batting and ive been quilting for over twenty years

What did the bag say about the quilting spacing? It should say quilt no more than X number of inches apart. maybe this one needed to be quilted closer together rather than tying? Which specific Mountain Mist product was it? they make lots.

Ok no today i learned something new i've never looked at the writting at the bottom of the bag I've just always bought the same batting with the difference of loft the bag says for best resluts tie or stich no farther then 5 inches apart. oh well live and learn If my mom was still able she would have been able to point out the flaw.

I have never had any do that even when I wash stuffed toys I have used it in. I agree with Tartan I would email the company.

I used a bamboo fiberfill for a quilt and while it was a total mess with bits of fiberfill all over the house while I was quilting it together it was the softest and nicest feeling quilt i have done. even after washing it still had the filling in there. that is just weird that it did that.

Unfortunately, most poly battings have to be quilted/tied closer than a cotton batt. I use poly batting and get good results. I like it better for quilts where I don't want shrink, or quilts that need to be warm. Some are obviously better quality than others - I like Hobbs Poly Down (currently on sale at Connecting Threads). If you tied the quilt, it should be relatively easy to take apart and add new batting. You will have to chalk this one up to a learning experience....one that you will never repeat, I am sure.
