Which batting would be better?
 

Connecting Threads has a sale on Hobbs batting. I've always used Warm and Natural or Quilters Dream because I love 100% cotton in my quilts. I've found anything with polyester far too warm. That being said, my question is this... Hobbs has 2 different types of cotton batting, one with scrim, one without. I'm not sure, since I've never used Hobbs before, which would be better. Any opinions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks ladies.... and gents.

Did you know that Warm & Natural on the large roll is Cotton/Poly? The only W&N that is 100% cotton is in the bags. The scrim on any batting holds it together a little better and can be quilted further apart. For Hobbs this one says can be quilted 8 inches apart, where the 'plain' needs to be quilted 4 inches apart. If you want a softer drape get the one without scrim, but if it is going to be used and washed a lot get the scrim...

You had me somewhat stymied in what I understood about W&N, so I checked their site.

So for others, you might want to check the Warm Company's site for clarifications ....

W&N is available in both yardage and in the bags.
It is 100% cotton and can be quilted as far as 10" apart.

An interesting fact ... the 100% cotton W&N has a 3% shrink rate.
Whereas they show the 80/20 has a 5% shrink!

I have recently used Hobbs 80/20 and find it quite pleasant. It quilts out very well and handles a little softer than W&N. No scrim will need more (closer) quilting, so you have to decide how you want to quilt.

I like the Hobbs 80/20...just used it and like it much better than Warm & Natural or any 100" cotton. I also like Hobbs Poly Down which has a little loft to it and makes a softer quilt. What I use depends on who the quilt is for, how often it will be washed (think baby or kids quilt) and whether the owner will want the warmth of poly. Living in south Texas, that's a big factor!

Thank-you...I was shocked when I saw the first post...so glad my roll of warm and natural is 100 percent cotton.

I am using Hobbs poly down for a quilt that I am hand quilting. I love this batting - so easy to quilt.

Do read the entire fiber content on Warm and Natural . The fibers "cotton" used is 100 percent cotton , but the scrim that holds the cotton fibers is not . The scrim in Warm and Natural is a poly. The Warm Company states "100% cotton fibers are punched with hundreds of needles into a strong, thin base material to prevent tearing, shifting or migration. " They do not include that "base" in the claim of 100 percent cotton.

In fact when you read the fiber content is 87.5 % cotton and 12.5 percent polymer.

As far as Hobbs batting , I like the heirloom 80/20 . It performs very well.
