Bennett's Grandma 06-08-2010 03:00 PM

I have an old, beyond repair quilt, and would like to make a bear out of this quilt. Does anyone have that pattern? It has jointed arms and legs and is secured with buttons. :?:  I am a "in my spare time quilter" which, working fulltime as an RN means I don't get to quilt much! My Mother and Grandmother quilted as long as I can remember. I am glad to take up where they left off. I don't know if my daughter will pass this hobby on or not.

I would like a bear pattern for my antique quilt if anyone has one. Thanks!!! Can't wait to get started!

Hello, welcome to the quiltingboard. I hope you will enjoy it as much as I do.
I am sorry that I am not familiar with the pattern you speak of. Please also create a post on the 'Main'. It is for anything directly related to quilting and I wouldn't want you to miss an opportunity to be helped.
Regards, Dorothy

Hello and Welcome from Northern Indiana !

I Googled Jointed Teddy bear and found one that uses cotter pins. Wonder if you couldn't modify to use buttons ?

There were some books listed but wasn't sure if you were looking for a free pattern or not , sorry

Hi and welcome from the sunny state of Florida!! I'm sure someone on this wonderful board will have the solution for you!

Can't help with the pattern but welcome from Southern Ontario. You will love it here. Anything you need to know about any kind of quilting can be found on this site and the people here are very generous with their help. Good luck with your bear.

I would think that any jointed bear pattern in the size you like would work. And probably easier then sewing with fur. I have made lots of jointed bears and sewing with plush is not easy. I also have bear made from an eighty year old baby quilt that is beyond precious. It is pink and ratty, but that gives it special powers, or so my kids used to tell me.

Don't be afraid to use some of the worst parts of the quilt. It gives it personality.

Welcome from Southern Illinois. I made a quilt bear, too. Some of the front parts of the quilt were so bad that I had to use the back for some of the pieces. The plain muslin just makes the pieced parts look even better. This is a great way to give a quilt that is so tattered it is beyond help a new life. A work of caution, I had to hand piece mine, and it was not hard at all!

Is it like you are making a Teddy Bear using the quilt as the bear sections? Pam, do you have a photo?

Brenda Sue 06-09-2010 02:15 PM

I had an old quilt my Grandmother had made that had gotten tattered and ragged. I made about 4 teddy bears out of it. It had several pieces, but was not jointed. It was either a Simplicity or McCall's pattern. Everyone that I gave a bear to still has them. I will look in my pattern stash and see if I have a jointed pattern. It is a great way to keep the memories of your quilt.

Here he is. This quilt was being used as a drop cloth to cover a motorcycle when it was "rescued". The grandmother had TONS of quilts, she was prolific. There were literally more holes than quilt left. Anyway this was given to me by the grandson. I think his wife was horrified that I cut it up, but it was in tatters, then I saw one in their barn!

That's a great idea, they are really cute. I've made a few jointed bears using cotter pins and washers for the joints. The pattern I used came from the book "Making Your Own Teddy Bear" by Peggy and Alan Bialosky and Robert Tynes. You might be able to get it at your public library. It is similar to the online pattern. Good luck and look forward to seeing his picture when you are done.

That's exactly what I'm looking for!

This was what was left from a small double wedding ring quilt. I carefully marked the pattern to match up the parts, his tummy matches, ect. I sewed it by hand, only took one evening. I had to use the plain muslin back of the quilt for the sides of the head because the front had so much damage.

I used a McCall's pattern. I did this about 4 or 5 years ago.

mom-6 06-10-2010 05:47 PM

I don't know if the pattern is still available, but I had one about 12-15 years ago that I made a whole bunch of bears from, just using regular cotton fabric, not quilted.

If I still had it I would be glad to pass it on, but it was in the house when it burned back in November of 2000.

Check both Simplicity and McCall's patterns, maybe it is still available.

hi and welcome

PlanoDebbie 09-28-2012 01:32 PM

The teddy bear that someone posted a picture of on QB had the sections all cut out of pieced material. It was not re-purposing an old worn out quilt. It was made from clothing that had been cut into squares and pieced together until it was big enough to cut an arm or leg or body piece from. This particular bear was sitting and has a protruding belly and the face did not have the usual oval shape that is so often seen on bear faces. I knew I should have bookmarked the page when I first saw it.

My daughter is a Baylor Bear, and I would love to make the first one for her!
