Bear Paw block
 

I'm posting this because my brain is not functioning tonight. I want to do a bear claw quilt, I have bought the material and have the pattern I want ( it's a picture I found on a site selling mass produced quilts and I fell in love with how they did it ) So I had bookmarked a free pattern online and low and behold it's got a major error! I did a test block because it didn't seam to add up in my head. I bought a layer cake and jelly roll for this quilt The claws and background I want to do from the jelly roll so HST from 2 1/2 inch squares equals 3 1/2" units finished and need them attached to a 3 1/2" block for the paw.......Now the part that I keep confusing myself What size is the center block (the center block in the middle of the four paws) 1 3/4" square? To follow the original pattern flow???
The block I'm following should have said 2 7/8" squares not 2 1/2" so I'm adjusting to use this jelly roll that I already bought. The center square for that one says 2 1/2" square but who knows if that's right???

If I am not mistaken--the center block (of the paw) is cut @ 4 1/2 inches. Your 2 1/2 sqs will make a 2" finished 1/2 sq triangle--attach 2 to two sides of the paw sq.
The 'center sq' is the one between the four paws.

Not sure I am understanding the difficulty.

Are you aware that this pattern uses the Easy Angle ruler? This ruler nips off the 1/4" dog ear like this:
http://www.joscountryjunction.com/ha...asy-angle-way/ which is why you can use 2.5" strips of fabric instead of 2-7/8" strips of fabric.

The center square is 2" finished. You join a 4.5" strip to each side of a 2.5" strip, then subcut these to 2.5" inches wide. Meanwhile, you have joined two bear claws with a 2.5" wide strip in-between them to create a 2" finished strip in-between the two claws. The 2" finished center square corresponds to the 2" finished "sashing" strips separating the four claws.

I am not seeing a problem with the measurements in this pattern.

IF you are not using the special ruler for this, a graph paper pad and 6 inch ruler will be your best friend for figuring it out yourself.

I use the lazy man's way. I use templates and every thing is figured out for me. Either that or I make my own patterns for things. I cut out enough so that I don't have to do any figuring. Sorry I am no help.

It might still work with the fabric measurements you all ready have if you sew the half square triangles on the diagonal and cut off the "short" side. Sew right on the diagonal and cut 1/4" from that seam--toss or use the waste for another project. The math for the other pieces will work then.

Here's one way to make HST's using jelly rolls. It will give you 2 1/2 inch HST's (unfinished).

If I were you I'd make a test block first.

Thanks for all your help! I saw where it used the ruler, I'm not in a place where I have any quilt shops at my disposal. Ill ask a fellow quilter here if she has the ruler. I figured out the pattern I just couldn't figure out the size block for the center block since I was adjusting the pattern....think I didn't explain it right....thanks again!!

You can make 2-1/2" HST from 2-1/2" strips. You just have to think outside the box. If you take two 3-1/2" x 2-1/2" strips you can get four 2-1/2" HSTs.
