I was sooo thrilled when I found it since it matched 100% perfectly... well, til I washed it lol.

Yes!!!Take it back. If you still have the receipt, it will be easier to get them to refund your $$. But even without a receipt, yell, cry, stomp your feet, till they take it back. :!: :!:

My DH has many colors of BVDs! Any cotton undergarments will work for testing colorfastness.

Deep reds and blues tend to bleed the worst. I always test those by dipping a corner in hot water - if I see any bleeding, I use Retayne before washing.

How much Epsom Salt do you use?

Finally after 5 years of fighting to get the furniture rearranged, it's done and hubby loves it and wishes we did it ages ago...) but anyhoooo.... I picked out some fabrics, including one deep, dark marbled purple batik to use in the runners...

I am a prewasher since I don't like shrinkage after all my time and energy .. and this is one of those times that I am soooo glad that I actually looked in the washing machine as I was dumping "like" colors in to it - and saw the dye just running like a stream off of that batik...

I pulled it out, quickly, drained the washer to get any dye out of it and ran the machine without it....

Took said beautiful deep purple batik to the kitchen sink and proceeded to hand wash the heck out of it until it looked like it was running clear.. then had it soak in a bucket with some vinegar and then after awhile, rinsed it, only to see yet more dye... hand washed it some more.. and more and finally when I felt comfortable enough, put it in the washer... with an extra rinse. by the end of the final extra rinse, there was no more dye tinge in the water... safe!

Dried it, ironed it, nearly in tears as I held the iron..

Yup. It's lavender and those 4 yards of beautiful, deep purple batiks will not be used for this project... at least for the front of it. I might just use it for backing at this point... but I'm saddened. I'll probably have to make a special trip out to the store to get more dark purple fabric to go in to the project but at this point, I'm hoping I can just do without :'(

Okay.
I feel better now. It's off my chest.
Blankety blank batik. Grrrr.
Okay. NOW it's off my chest :D

I had this happen to a quilt that was made for me, and I didn't realize that it would bleed. Now I wash my quilts #1 in cold water, #two, I always use twqoor three fabric sheets that grab the color so it doesn't run back into the fabric, and I also use some Synthropol to help make the extra dye come out. Too much washing like you did will eventually lighten the color. Better you discovered this before you used it in a quilt.
You might email the company who makes the fabric and ask them how you can stop this dye release. If you get an answer, let us know, okay!

galvestonangel 09-08-2010 03:58 PM

I usually pre wash and definitly batiks. Some of my batiks run some don't. One lady told me she does not prewash but when she finishes the quilt she washes it with the Shout color catcher sheets. I thought that would be O K til now. If it changes the color that drasticly, it could throw the colors off on the quilt.

Ahhh that is a bummer

Oh Yarn I'm so sorry.
You know since it lost so much of the dye, I think I'd go ask the folks where you bought it from if they were aware that it looses ALL of its color. I mean you bought purple not lavender. I'm not saying that they will do anything about it but Gee, that just sucks. Perhaps they will give you another yardage of it and you can set the dye yourself before it has a chance to bleed out?
Just a thought. Hope it all works out for you.
Faith :XD:

bearisgray 09-08-2010 09:41 PM

If you are talking about WalMart - usually the fabrics I've purchased there have good manners - but one piece (orange halloween print) ran and ran and ran - I still had the receipt - and was allowed to return it.

I think a commercially dyed fabric should NOT need the use of Retayne and/or Synthropol when washed - or vinegar or salt or anything else, for that matter.

If it does, I consider it improperly manufactured.

P.S. Glad you didn't wreck your other fabrics with this stinker.

zz-pd 09-08-2010 09:48 PM

I am so sorry this happened to you. I would take it back to the store and at least Get your money back. God bless.

Yarn or Fabric 09-09-2010 04:49 AM

I'll be heading over to Walmart today to compare it to the original just to see if I'm blowing it out of proportion.. maybe the loss wasn't *that* bad but man it was a river of red that ran from it and a lot of hand washing under running water before it looked like it was done doing its thing...

I'm going to also go to a different Hancocks and a Hobby Lobby today to see if I can find a replacement for it....
I'll let you guys know how it turns out.

And yeah, the evil empire is Walmart lol. Everyone seems to complain about their fabric so I had to make a giggle out of it. Usually I call it Wallyworld (Family Vacation, sorry folks, Wallyworld is closed), but in this case, the Evil Empire sounded funnier to me ;)

Colbaltjars62 09-09-2010 05:13 AM

Yarn I hope it works out for you. When you find your new treasure take a pic before you wash it and show us?
I have always called them Wally world... lol
In this case I think it's a fitting name. ;)
Good luck :D

stefanib123 09-09-2010 05:28 AM

Walmart is usually pretty good about returing stuff. Especially if you have your receipt.

I've returned fabric there before because it didn't match what I needed it fot when I got home, so they should for sure do it with something like that!

They will take it back to the fabric Dept. and measure it to make sure its still the same size you paid for. If its not, then they will only refund how much you have with you. For example, if you paid for 3 yards but only returned 2 you will only get the money back for 2.

I've sent you a pm, also.

Good luck!

Have you tried using Dye Grabber? I use this on every
type of material I pre wash and have never had a problem.
You can buy this at Hancocks. It works with any water
temperature setting. It does change colors after using it
in the washer. But the peace of mind of not having a
material bleed out on you is wonderful. Just a new person
on this quilting board. Thanks for all the wonderful
message posted each day. I really enjoy all the neat
information. Betty Lee

I also use retayne. It works very well. I use color catchers, too, and they work like a charm.

jamannix 09-09-2010 10:24 AM

I use Retayne with commercial fabrics and Synthrapol with hand-dyes and
have never had a problem. I didn't want to spend the money but I learned
to quilt watching Alex Anderson's show "Simply Quilts" and when she admitted
that she had a fabric run and ruin one of her quilts, I bought a few bottles of each.
Good luck.

Then the fabric should be washed in nearly boiling water to remove all the wax before they wind it on bolts and sell to the public.

You have a fabric that was not properly manufactured. You need to return that fabric to the store! Even if you don't get your money back, they should exchange it. They should then return their bolt to their supplier.

But, you can also use Epsom Salt to set dye in fabrics. It works great and much cheaper and readily available.

I am in a block of the month with a batik so I will be washing in the kitchen sink, how much epson salt should I put in the water. This is my first try at using batik. thank you Gail

Yarn or Fabric 09-09-2010 12:10 PM

I decided to just keep it and use it for the backing to the runners. I compared it to the original and it was quite a bit lighter but not as bad as I originally thought but most of the lighter purple areas in my washed fabric is now periwinkle if that makes sense. I considered taking it back but for what I paid for it I might as well just use it for the backing.... but then maybe I should just not risk it and take it back the next time I go in. I would be horrified if it wasn't done doing its thing.... I didn't have enough time today to go through the customer service lines even if I had decided to return it while I was there. I'm sure I'll be back over there in the next week... I'll return it and get a purple calico or something to use for the backing. I did find some great material at Hobby Lobby when I went out so I'll be washing that today and adding that to the fabric lineup...

I will honestly say that I have never ever seen fabric bleed like that before though. It was just horrifying. I had it in the sink with warm water running over it and all you had to do was squish it and red ran freely. Hmmm. Maybe I will just take it back. I suppose it is better to be safe than sorry....

bearisgray 09-09-2010 12:34 PM

I can remember maybe three or four fabrics that did that for me.

They were not batiks.

One was a blue - I had ten yards of it to begin with - and it had shrunk to about nine yards when I returned it. The store people were not particularly pleasant about it.

One was a turquoise - it wasn't quite "done" when I decided to use it, but the front was dark enough so it wouldn't afflict it.

One was an orange -

Yarn or Fabric 09-14-2010 10:53 AM

I returned it to the store. She didn't say anything but kind of had a look in her eye like I can't believe you are returning this.....

I feel okay with it - I'm glad that I won't have to worry about it bleeding ever again!

I also found some other great fabrics to use instead of that one and a friend of mine gave me some purple similar to one that I had run out of so I am set for this project :)

bearisgray 09-14-2010 11:02 AM

be sure to dunk them first 8-) :XD:
