You don't exactly have to LET a cat lay on the fabric...and it washes just fine.

Fabric is just another surface. It's not hallowed ground in my house. My furbabies are way more important!

Hear hear!!!

I don't have quilts on the beds in case of potential damage to them, my kitties are more important to me than having to worry about that. I finish about one quilt a month and give 99% of them away. But first I hang them on the wall till the next one is done so that we can enjoy them before they are donated.

NANAOF2BOYS 09-22-2011 08:25 AM

same here 3 cats and a german shepard so our house is not fur free if people dont like it they can just stay away :) I wash my quilts before sending them out and also a lint roller works as well most people i know also know we have animals so dont mind if they find a little fur on them.....

sewmom 09-22-2011 09:51 AM

I have a my quilt on my bed and the cats are always sleeping there too. I finally decided to lays sheet over it. It's much easier to change it to a clean one than to keep the cats off it or wash the quilt all the time. If company comes, I remove it.

What does bother me and is a question for all of you cat lovers...HOW DO YOU KEEP THE CAT HAIR OFF OF YOUR BEAUTIFUL QUILTS AND FABRIC? I see so many picutes of quilts, fabric, blocks, etc. that have your cats/kittens laying on the quilt, sewing machiine, block, fabric, and I'm sitting here thinking OMG, all that cat hair.

I do not mean any dis-respect to any of you cat lovers (I am a shih tzu lover...I have 9 of them) but I don't let my dogs lay on any of my quilts or fabric. They don't shed hair, but I don't care, they ARE NOT laying on my fabric, becuase I don't know where that fabric will end up at as a gift.

Our shih tzu shed. Even my daughter's Chihauhuas shed a little bit. My Pomeranian sheds in both spring and fall, as do the Yorkie and the Schnauzer, who has diabetes and has lost her vision to cataracts. And If I had a short haired domestic cat inside, I imagine s/he would shed.

I vacuum a lot, use lots of lint rollers and wash projects before giving them away. I know some people just can't stand the thought of having animals in the house. Their privilege and also their loss. It means a lot to me to have the veterenarian who treats my dogs say, "Wow! That dog really loves you." That's more important to me than a few stray hairs, no matter from whom they came. froggyintexs

A friend, whose son has asthma, poor littel guy would end up in the Emergency room monthly---she FINALLY got rid of her two cats, as advised by the allergist. She vacuumed like mad and the child has never had another asthma attack since---and it has been a few years.
Sorry, cat lovers,,,,couldn't have your quits in my house.

And I certainly wouldn't want them in your house or in the house of anyone who is allergic to dog or cat dander. froggyintexas

I had 3 cats and moved to Hong Kong-left the moggies with a friend. 2 years later I was still picking cat hair off things.

Wash-lint brush-or cat lover!

I am sorry for those who for one reason or another does not like animals or can not have them. In my house the animal are part of the family and have the same privileges as I do. Eat when I eat-snack when I snack-sleep on the quilts when I sleep with the quilt-the fabric is washable as are the fur babies. I will admit that the fur babies don't get washed in the winter-too cold-but the quilts do!

Bottom line-love me-love my animals!!

Love me, love my cats.

PKITTY1 09-22-2011 02:53 PM

Lint rollers work great for removing the worst of my cat's hair from her resting places. Unfortunately, my cat's long hair still is present on me and my clothes when I quilt and I don't lint roll myself often. I don't worry about it. If I was quilting for others (paid consignments) then I would worry about the buyer's allergies. Food for thought...thanks for making me think.

I have a dog (Missy) that sheds more than any cat alive. I also have a cat who sheds some too. I take my clothes, quilt items anything that can fit into the dryer and put it on air for about 20 minutes. It makes it spotless.

What a terrific tip! I'll have to remember that. Thanks.

I cannot keep cat hair off of my quilts. I cannot keep cats off of my quilts. Since I am not the boss of the house (the cats are, of course, the boss and bossette of the house) these things are out of my control.

There is a very wide difference between owning a dog and being owned by a cat!

oops I hit send too soon.
You're right a cat 'owns it's pet,(person.)
There are 2 cat's & 2 dogs here,& both have hair all over my house! When ever I get around to making a quilt for my DM (who is very allergic to cats) I'll take extra care when I make it, & I alllllways wash my quilts when I'm finished with 'em.The potholder I made her doesn't seem to be bothering her. If I were to make quilts for sale or something else I'll always tell 'em about the pets, then it'll be up to them whether they want 'em. I certainly don't want someone who is allergic to cats to get sick from one of my quilts!

dublb 09-22-2011 07:54 PM

I just realized that what gets covered in animal hair at my house is my afghans!!! They have to go in the dryer weekly!

donnalynett 09-22-2011 08:49 PM

My cat has an angora type long hair and you can see it floating in the air. Lint rollers are purchased by the dozen and the washing machine is going constantly. I am fortunate to have a separate room for my fabric and he is not allowed in there. I have even found cat hair in the freezer! Just have to clean, clean, clean and use those lint rollers. I would not give up my cat for any reason.

In the freezer???? Wow, I thought I was unique. My cat's hat also floats through the air. It caused the fire alarm to go off one day in my apartment. When they came to fix it, it was full of cat hair!

Well I have 2 siamese (my boys) who think they are human and own the house. Yes they come into my room which is why I put window seats in for them. It seams though that the seats are not as comfortable as my fabric or my current project. So I joined the "lint roller club". Membership is cheap and everyone (my boys included) is happy. Did you know that the Medical Association has found that people who have cats are less likely to have a heart attack or stroke. The reason is that cats demand your attention and we will stop what we are doing to give it to them. They are a natural stress reliever :)

OKLAHOMA PEACH 09-23-2011 09:14 AM

Cats are put on the back porch with their toys when I sew, they are still young and nosy, dog is allowed to stay, he is not interested.

Roxie, you do know cats well ... they are just awesome little creatures who demand love and attention & give it freely!

I have nothing to add as I don't have a cat. I DO have to say that one of the most fun things to do on this board is to see, besides all of your beautiful work, is photos of your beautiful cats and dogs. I love cats as long as they belong to someone else. They are so regal and mysterious. The biggest mystery is why they became domesticated animals to begin with since they are so self reliant. I myself am a dog lover. I guess it is my aversion to the litter box. LOL

There's a book out there that explores this in some detail - "The Unadulterated Cat" by Terry Pratchett with illustrations by Gray Jolliffe. If you recognize the authors you'll know that the whole book is comical :-D Really, I recommend it for any cat lover or anyone who wonders why someone would become a cat lover! It was out of print for quite a while but it looks like it has been reprinted recently. I may just have to pick a copy up for our long-suffering and amazingly helpful vet....

romanojg 09-25-2011 12:49 PM

I see this all of the time as well. I have an older cat and two dogs and even though my dogs will sometimes come into my room and lay on the floor my cat never does. A few months after I got her I realized that if I didn't stop her from coming into my bedroom I'd never be able to go to work again without hair on me. My sewing room is right next to each other and when I taught her not to come into my bedroom she just wouldn't go into my sewing room either.

Kas 09-25-2011 01:51 PM

Rinsing the cat once or twice a week with distilled water will remove the allergen. It isn't the hair itself, but the reaction the hair has with the cat saliva when they groom themselves that is the allergen. And the reason it takes so long to remove the cat hair from a home with a vacuum cleaner is they spew the stuff right back out as you vacuum. That is why, even if you have a HEPA filter, you should always dust (what is that?) after using the vacuum cleaner. They cause dust and allergens to become airborne, only to settle over everything later.

maryb119 09-25-2011 01:53 PM

I don't have pets due to alergies.

Pam H 09-25-2011 06:13 PM

I am not a cat lover and am allergic but we have 2 cats anyway. I keep the door to my sewing room closed as well as my bedroom door.

CharlottsQuilts 09-26-2011 04:05 AM

I made a little bed for my cat which sits under my cutting table. She is black with white on her face and white legs. Can you believe I found fabric that is just like that? I also made her a little placemat for her food and water bowl.
