Decorative and functional, bed runners add the beauty of a quilt to your bedroom decor without the weight, bulkiness or expense
I was thinking of just having a white sheet with bed runners for color. Also will make several to change the effect.

keegancak 10-08-2011 06:58 AM

I made one for my bed and love it. It just adds a punch of color and it's something I made.

Grace MooreLinker 10-08-2011 07:02 AM

I keep a blanket across the foot of my bed for a foot warmer

bigsister63 10-08-2011 07:05 AM

I think that they are really pretty for decoration and adding color to room. Many pattern can be adapted to make bed runners so you can try a new pattern, make it cheap and quick and change the color of your room often.

suzieQ 10-08-2011 07:10 AM

Actually that is almost what I do except I have a ivory bed spread (walmart $30 ) for our king size bed. I make nap or twin size quilts and lay then across the top of the bed with almost no drop. They are cheaper, easier and quicker to make so I can change the color of the room often for not TOO much money and have the fun of making different quilt patterns in many colors combinations.

It does all the things mentioned. I live where it is very warm and get tired of always making the bed with a quilt when it's not used for warmth so made a bed runner and love it. It also had the added bonus of keeping the feet warm. When it gets cold I'll go back to the quilt.

RaeM 10-08-2011 08:36 AM

It also makes a great "pillow cover"...my quilt goes under the pillows and the "bed runner" goes over the pillow area. It makes making the bed so much easier...you will have to measure how wide and how long your particular situation requires. I made one of those dimensional quilts that had a table runner pattern included. I just enlarged that to fit my needs...it really "makes the bed"

I recently stayed at a 'high-end' hotel in the Orlando area while visiting The Mouse. The bed runner in my room was the perfect splash of color - I'm planning on making several as Christmas gifts this year!

- I also live in Florida (north central), and my feet get cold in winter!!!
- I LOVE the idea of not having to make a bed-sized quilt to reflect a holiday or season, or to simply change decor.
- I feel better about giving bed runners as gifts (than a bed-sized quilts) and really bust my stash with just a few projects.
- I am drawn now more to what I can FINISH, especially as holidays loom large on the horizon.

Adding color and pattern but they are also called Foot Warmers in some quilt magazines.

Rose Burnett 10-08-2011 10:46 AM

I stayed at three motels recently. All had solid bedcovers with a fancy bedrunner. I had never seen these until this summer. Rose

nannyrick 10-08-2011 11:05 AM

I,m working on five of them right now for 5 GDs.
Clotilde has a book of ten easy ones that are so adorable.
Can't wait to get them done so that I can make mine.
I always have cold feet, LOL

lalaland 10-08-2011 11:17 AM

I thought they were just for decoration. I made one for the bed in our second home and everyone that has seen it wants one too! I have a solid color bedspread so it adds color and pizazz.

quilt4now 10-08-2011 11:52 AM

Great discussion. Good ideas about ways to make the bed runners. THey are on my to do list.

mimee4 10-08-2011 01:13 PM

I like mine - cold feet during the winter - plus it does add color.

Bed runners make good dog resting area for my two dogs.

I think bed runners are neat, but won't waste my time making these for Christmas this year - I'd love to give them, but neither of my DILs make the beds, so would be definite waste of time to make and give to them!! LOL However, I am making table runners - same principle, just less quilting.

jitkaau 10-08-2011 04:48 PM

I would never use one but think the purpose could be to warm the feet in a cold climate, or to protect the quilt top if anyone in the household is in the habit of sitting on the bed to remove shoes and socks.

patimint 10-08-2011 05:02 PM

Great to keep my hubby's feet warm. His are always cold, but adding another full size quilt makes me too hot. Sure fills good in the winder when even my toes are cold.

BarbZ 10-08-2011 05:24 PM

there was a picture of one posted by Mucky in S. Texas a while ago that was beautiful. But if you go to search and punch in Bed Runner there are some pretty ones to look at. They are nice foot warmers or just decor.

ging10ging 10-08-2011 05:29 PM

Hi, No don't think you shouldn't make it for them in the winter it gets pretty cold some times. Last yr we used our heat more than all the 20 yrs we've lived down here. It's not like being up N with snow but your blood thins down here so if you've been here awhile I'm sure they would appreciate anything warm for those days. I know I have afghans and fluffy blankies people have giving us for gifts and really appreciate it. We will be in the living room with the blankie up to our nose. Hope they enjoy them. Sue

Bonbonary 10-08-2011 06:03 PM

All of these ideas, especially the pockets, make bed runners definitely useful and worth making. I'm going to try one for myself.

We have also run in to them while traviling, on a cruse all guest are asked to use them when taking a afternoon rest as it protects the spreads. And some people do not like to remove foot ware.

jigsymom 10-08-2011 10:34 PM

I keep an old quilt on my bed. Its white side up as the otherside is pretty sad and faded. I use it mainly as I have a little dog that likes to take naps on my bed during the day or if I amy laying down. He does have his own little bed for sleeping .lol. Any way I have thought about makeing a bed runner for the bed but I am wondering what the proper size would it be for a queensize?

sewbeadit 10-08-2011 11:04 PM

Never heard of them that way, but sounds good to me. I think it is a really nice touch.

Kath12 10-09-2011 07:56 AM

I plan on making a few for gifts
There was some on the bed at the hotel we stayed at last week

The Quiet Quilter 10-09-2011 12:01 PM

I always have cold feet
since my knee surgery and
never thought of making a
bed runner for warmth. Bet
I will now!! Hugs, Sharon

julee.anderson 10-09-2011 04:51 PM

Besides being decorative, I have one on the foot of our guest bed because the spread is white and suit cases are dirty!!

BarbO 10-09-2011 04:54 PM

To me they add color to a plain bedspread. My husband also said they keep the feet warm.

Greenheron 10-09-2011 05:21 PM

Beauty needs no justification.

Betty Ruth 10-09-2011 06:24 PM

Great ideas.

jrtpetey 10-09-2011 06:35 PM

With the dogs jumping on the bed, I'd say it's kinda like a doormat for the actual bed covering!

Kaye 10-10-2011 03:41 PM

I just couldn't pass up this topic! Last year I stayed at a hotel in Anaheim CA in April for a school conference. I had no idea how cold the nights were going to be! One night several of us were going to walk to a restaurant several blocks away. I took the bed runner off of the bed and used it for a warm wrap. When I got onto the elevator another woman asked me if my wrap was actually the bed runner----I sheepishly said yes. Her response was "brilliant!" and quickly left the elevator to get her "wrap", too!!!!

Toni-in-Texas 10-10-2011 05:52 PM

They serve the same purpose as throw pillows. If you like to add a bit extra, they're nice.

biscuitqueen 10-12-2011 07:54 PM

dang me.....I just ware socks to bed.
