Bed sheet
 

I was at Goodwill today looking for something and while passing the bedding etc. department, something caught my eye. It was a flat sheet with a lovely small rose print on it. I looked at the label and it was 50% cotton and 50% polyester. Now I only buy cotton fabric for my quilts, but I couldn't resist the adorable pattern. Looking at it good, I would say it is a bit thinner than most cottons. I would hate to put it on the back of a quilt that had so much time and money invested in , only to not have it last.

Have any of you used a 50/50 sheet for the backing, and if so, what was your experience? If I were to use it, I would probably keep it for a quilt I'm keeping as to not take a chance with it as a gift.

What's your feeling on the subject.

The 50-50 sheets I've had have lasted a loooong time - and the polyester in it outlasts the cotton.

One of the problems with the polyester/cotton combination is the likelihood of pilling. I think it's the combination of a man-made fiber rubbing up against a short natural fiber that makes one of them break.

I have used 50/50 sheets many times with no problems at all.

I have come across some sheets that pilled - they were awful - ended up using them for covering plants when it was going to freeze.

Most of the ones I've had do/did not pill and felt smooth as can be against my skin.

I would guess that if it's not already pilled, it won't. From your description, it has been used, washed and dried already, so that should not be a concern.

You can use 50/50. It usually is not as soft as only cotton and some people find poly scratchy. Poly is stronger because it is plastic and we all know that plastic doesn’t degrade.

However, if you like the print use it and enjoy.

I might use it on a picnic quilt. Since poly isn't breathable and it wears hard. So personally, I wouldn't use a blend on a bedquilt or throw that's up against my skin or someone else's for any length of time. I'm a sucker for 100% cotton.

I shy away from polyester as a rule due to it's heat retention, but I must admit the feel is really nice. (and it's so pretty) There are no signs of pilling on this one. I know it's been washed, but no idea how many times.
