Beginner Classes on Line?
 

I have been reading and getting loads of information from this QB and I saw something regarding classes taught on line. I am a real newbie and afraid to get my feet wet but I keep hoping to overcome my fear. I plan to take a class that doesn't start until September and runs for months, has been recommended to me but in the interim I would really like to try an online class. Would really appreciate any recommendations you may have for me. ;)

I took 2 classes with Jenny Doan from Missouri Star Quilt Co.
The name of the site is Craftsy.com.
She is so easy to understand for newbies that is a pleasure to
work along with her. There are many classes on Craftsy to take.
You can go along at your own pace. I highly recommend it, in my opinion.

I also took the Jenny Doan classes on craftsy.com. I really wanted to learn but all the local quilt shops only taught a few beginning classes and I would need to wait months. The online classes are self paced and perfect for me.

Craftsy classes (especially Jenny's) are awesome! Don't hesitate to go ahead and sign up. You work at your own pace, and your class registration never expires, so you can watch it over and over if you need to. Good luck!

I haven't taken any of the Craftsy classes, but I have taken classes at QuiltUniversity.com and I liked them a lot. Most of these classes are specific to a technique - not general quilting classes (so most assume that you know the basics). Not sure if this is what your looking for, but check the site out and the courses and see.

The classes were good, good clear instructions from the teacher, quick responses from the teacher on the online forum shared by all the class, ability to upload pictures to a forum area where you can ask specific questions about your work.

I agree. Sign up for "Quick Quilting" then sign up for "Quick Quilting 2" when it is on sale. Also sign up for the free Craftsy Block of the Month. Although we are doing the May block, you can go back and start at the beginning. I do not particularly like the blocks we have made; but I have learned so much by making the blocks. I am learning a new skill each month. Who knows, I may eventually like the blocks I've made. Do sign up for that free class. There is also a free "Sewing Machines 911" or something similar. It is a very basic class.

Is there a cost for taking these classes on line?

Most classes are $29 at the moment and the sewing machine one and the Block of the Month are free.

I've taken a lot of courses at Craftsy.com, and I haven't run into a bad, or even mediocre instructor yet! I've paid anywhere from free to $14.99 to $19.99 to $25.99 to $29.99 for them. Just look for the specials. Do start with the free Block of the month. I'm not keeping up with the month either, and it doesn't matter because if I have a question, it is answered promptly anyway, even when I am out of sync with the month. And no, they aren't the greatest blocks, but they were chosen to teach you specific skills, not to be the prettiest blocks, and Wow, am I learning. That Sewing Machine 911 is great too, and it's free. It's all about trouble-shooting common problems when sewing, and it really doesn't matter what kind of a machine you have. What's great about these courses is that you can go back to them again and again; your access never expires, which makes them a great bargain.

There are also some awesome DVDs available, that I've used, and more than one book on learning to quilt that has a corresponding DVD to help you out, especially with the basics. Don't count them out. They are yours forever.
