Beginner pressing question.

I am going to make 4patch blocks. Do you press both halves to the same side or one half one way and the other half in the opposite direction?

I do it like this: http://quiltville.blogspot.com/2005/...tch-seams.html

Any time i can press seams of the "parts" of a block in opposite directions so that they will "nest" together when i put the block together, i do it. Just makes matching seams much easier i think.

I also like to press so the seams nest with adjoining blocks. If not I just press toward the darker fabric.

Odd man out here...I press seams open whenever possible. I think it makes the blocks lay flatter and I also find it easier to match points with open seams. Just me.

I agree, You want your seams to nest.

Thanks, Gale! sometimes I was lucky with those intersections and sometimes not - now I know why!

Press to the darker fabric or whichever side you need to in order to "nest" (dovetail) the seams against each other.

This is the only type of quilt I've done but when my grandma showed mr it was one row left and one row right and using pins with the smallest heads possible so you can carefully sew over or pull at the last possible moment.
