Beginner Question

I see soooo many blogs for quilters. Are there any blogs for beginner quilters? I don't want to make purses and things, just quilts and I would love to be able to go to a blog that has all beginners with a host that is a teacher for us newbies.

Any ideas?

Personally, I don't visit many blogs. Generally they have way too much uninteresting [to me, anyway] stuff that I don't want to wade through to get to the good stuff.

I do however search You Tube for videos I might want to watch. I also check out the QB tutorials and postings for whatever topic I am interested in. I have found many useful sites and hints right here on the QB.

You could search in Google or Bing or whatever you use for a search engine and put in Beginner Quilting Blogs and see what you get. Although many of them are wonderful sources of info just remember that anybody can start a blog!

I agree that you will get much excellent information here - there is a give-and-take that is not available on blogs. There are many ways to do the same thing and I think this board covers everything!

I learned most of my beginning info through books. Many are available from your library. Also getting a simple, cheap kit pattern should teach you some basics while you're actually making something!

And then, of course, we're all here to help with your many questions!

You might also want to consider taking a beginner's quilting class somewhere to give you that confidence boost. I am self-taught and have made 3 quilts, working on my 4th. They aren't perfect, but they're pretty darn good! However, I still would like to take a class as I feel it would fill in some gaps that I have missed. That would have to be after Christmas ... too busy now. But I'm looking forward to it. That's just my 2 cents worth. (But this board is wonderful and soooooooo very helpful!)

For me, this site contains it all. Some posts are for quilters other posts are for crafters. You can pick and choose. (And there is always plenty to choose) Love the helpful links being posted for beginners and old timers, too. Thanks to everyone!

I agree I feel like I've quadrupled my quilting knowledge from this board.

If you are a member of Quilters Club of America you get free access to qnntv.com. They have one show that is dedicated to beginning quilters. Actually, I think you can join qnntv without joining QCA but you get some other benefits with QCA.

Like others have said, utube has wonderful videos for beginners. But we are here to help you every step of the way. Just ask and you'll get LOTS of help.

A class at a Local Quilt Shop (LQS) is a very good starting point. If you don't have access to an LQS with a good teacher then Alex Anderson has a very good little book Start Quilting Six Projects for First-time Quilters. It has all the basics, easy to follow along step by step. Only 40 pages, so it is not overwhelming.
I started with that one book, and expanded the library as time went on but I still like going back to this one.

When I started quilting QNN was free then Fons and Porter bought it and now it costs. But for a beginner it is worth the money to see all the videos and there are a lot.
Eleanor Burns is by far the best teacher and her videos are free on her website under the television/video button.

Her books are very easy to follow and if you watch the videos that go with the book you cant go wrong.

As a beginner I found books to be my biggest source of infomation. I purchased several "Guides to Quilting" books and they are still very, very helpful.

Select a pattern that says easy or beginner, then look for a tutorial on this board, Missouri Quilt Company and/or You Tube. From there, jump in and get started. Ask questions on the board with pics so you can get some great help. Good luck.

Go to "about.com/quilting" and you will find all the instructions for beginners there.

qnntv.com has a show for beginners called Quilty with Marianne Fons' daughter Mary. I joined qnntv for $24, I think, a year. It has tons of shows/videos other than Quilty as well. For me, a beginner, it's worth the money. Penny Halgren has a site, how-to-quilt.com that's free. My go-to book is Better Homes and Gardens Complete Guide to Quilting.

I do not follow blogs. If you go to youtube and do a search for any type of quilting there are many videos to watch.I have learned a lot watching them.the board is great too-many tutes.I am a visual learner and can read all day and not quite grasp something-but can watch someone do it one time in a video and have my ah ha moment.

CorgiNole 11-11-2011 08:59 AM

There are several of us in the blogosphere who are chronicling our learning process.

I agree with the You Tube suggestion. I've used it when I needed to see versus read about a specific technique - for me it was how to bring the bobbin thread to the top.

The downside to a teaching blog is that it is less likely to be in real time, but depending on your learning style, that may not be an issue.

Cheers, K

Unfortunately, I didn't pay attention to my grandmother's quilting (sewing, yes, but quilting, no) when she was lucid and actively quilting, so I was a beginner, too, in spite of her legacy. I used YouTube to exhaustion, Missouri Star Quilt site/tutes, and this Board.
