Bernina 1630 Zipper Foot

1 Attachment(s)
Does anyone know how to make the zipper foot work on the Bernina 1630?

I put the foot on straight stitch, move the horizontal dial to the left or to the right to move the needle, and start to sew. Instead of the needle staying to the left or to the right, it starts to zig zag. That ties the zipper foot down with thread.

What am I doing wrong? :(

Hmmm, that is very odd. When you select straight stitch and move the needle over what does your read out show for stitch width? If it is anything other than zero, you need to manually change it to zero. Perhaps the act of moving the needle over is making the machine think you want to zig zag. Changing your stitch width to zero will tell it you want to straight stitch.

I have never had this happen but I have 153QE that is about 15 years old.

Are you sure you are selecting a straight stitch?

Try moving the needle, then selecting the stitch. Maybe you are hitting something accidentally?

I have the Bernina 1530 and I have to check my manual. there is something you have to set to get the thing to work. I hate to use the zipper foot on my 1530. I'm on my way home now. I'll check the manual and get back to you in about an hour.

I too have a 1530. Never have sewn a zipper with it. Do you have a manual?? Here is ALL I could find in my manual...

Okay, to change the needle position you use the cursor and move it on the zero (or at least it looks like a zero to me) under the stitch width line. Then you click on any of the bars on either side of the zero to change the needle position either right or left. The stitch width should be at zero as for straight sewing.

Are you sure that moving the horizontal dial isn't setting the distance for the zig zag (which will move the needle)? I had a 1630 years ago and I don't remember a dial to move the needle. I only remember 2 dials. One to set the stitch length (vertical) and one to set the stitch width (zig zag). I can't remember off hand how to move the needle. My 180 has 2 buttons that move the needle left and right.

I was moving the dial to change the stitch width thinking that is how you make the needle move. That's why it would zig zag. It all makes so much sense now that I know the magic formula.

I've owned this machine for five years and only now know how to move the needle thanks to all of your replies. xoxoxox

That's what my manual looks like. It says Adjustment: needle position left/right. That's not very helpful if you don't know how to adjust the needle. I looked all over the manual and couldn't figure it out. This sewing machine is as hard as my "smarter than me" phone.

Thank you all so much for your help. I should have known that this was the place to go to get expert help. :)
