bernina 440

My family bought me a Bernina 440 for Christmas. Anyone else have this machine. Do love it? Hate the thing.Any information would be helpful.

I've had my 440 for about 4 years. It is a great machine! I do not have the embroidery module, but I did use the Bernina Stitch Regulator for 3 years until I got comfortable with free motion quilting without it It is a very good machine for just regular garment and home dec sewing in addition to it's use as in quilting.

There are a few extras you should ask for from your family. Get the #10 (edge stitch) foot. You'll use it to do all kinds of things! It is my favorite foot. Also get them to buy you a bunch more Bernina bobbins. Do not go with the generic ones or cheap ones you get on eBay - get the real thing. My other favorite foot is the open toed embroidery (#20). It is very good for applique. You already have the walking foot, free motion foot, and the BSR so you've got the best stuff!

I have an Aurora 430, and I like it a lot. Why don't you like the 440? Anything in particular?

You should be able to get lessons on operating it from your dealer.

Can't imagine hating a Bernina. I love mine and a friend has a 440 and she loves it. Maybe a class will help.

I have a Bernina 440 QE with the stitch regulator. Totally love it!! If classes are available, take them. If not, check online for youtube videos.

I did not get the embroidery module.

I guess I'm just a little afraid of it. This is my dream machine. I don't want to brake the thing.

I love my 440 QE. When you have a question about it's use, watch the DVD that comes with the machine, it's alot of help. The BSR foot is great. I free motion all the time. Love the machine.

I don't think you can break it, and if you do, it's under warranty so they'll fix it.

I think it's the best sewing machine I've owned.

Do not have this particular Bernina, but have the 150QE and the new 830. Before that I had several others and traded up to the 830. Love my Bernina machines.

I have the 440 QE without the embroidery module. I bought it just over a year ago when I got into quilting and love it. I'm still learning about what this machine can do. It sews like a dream. Enjoy.

I have the 440QE with the embroidery module and stitch regulator. I must admit I really don't use the stitch regulator that much or the embroidery module. But I absolutely love the machine itself.

What a wonderful gift your family gave you. I have the Bernina 440 and love it and never plan to part with it. I also like the BSR for free motion quilting and used it until I got my long arm machine. I do not have the embroidery module and never plan to get it. Not an interest of mine. Enjoy your new machine. Take the classes on it. Most Dealers provide Machine Mastery classes. I learned tons a those classes and I also took a machine quilting class to learn more about the BSR and I learned alot from that. Enjoy your new machine.

I love my 440QE. It is sturdier than you may think. When I first got it I was playing with the stitch regulator and something happened and it flew off the shank and the needle broke (I guess I didn't have it latched quite right). I was so afraid I may have broken it, but it has worked fine ever since I bought it. It's a great machine.

dunster 12-19-2011 07:28 PM

I have one, love it. I use quality generic metal bobbins with no problems.

I have the Bernina 440 and love it! If you have a good shop close by take some lessons on how to use it. If not, the Bernina site has webinars of simple projects to get you familiar with the machine and using some of the features. My LQS has a Bernina class that meets for free to do small projects. The best advice I can give you is, put away your old machine (if you have one) and start using your new best friend!

A broken machine, and a machine you don't use because you are afraid of breaking it, are essentially the same thing. If you need some motivation then do it for me! That's my dream machine, too, and I'm jealous as all get out! ;)

I have the Aurora 440 QE with the BSR (stitch regulator) and the embroidery module. It's a great machine. Lately I have been working on bed sized quilts and quilted them with my Aurora 440 QE on my Bernina quilt frame. It's a great machine.

I have had my 440QE for about 5 years now and absolutely love it. Do take the classes that are provided with it. I use it for FMQ all the time, sometimes with the BSR and often without. The more you use the BSR the more comfortable you become with the method and can do it without. Good luck and have fun with it.

CarrieC 12-20-2011 06:18 AM

I adore my 440 QE - I saved up for 3 years to buy it. I agree with all the advice above, buying extra bobbins (not the cheap knock off ones you'll regret it), watching the DVD and taking classes. I love the BSR but I'm also learning FMQ without it - I suppose the concept of how FMQ was helped along with the BSR.

I did not buy the embroidery option.

The 440 is my dream machine.....maybe someday......enjoy!! I just got a Bernina 350 for Christmas and I LOVE it! My next trade up will be to the 440.

MomtoBostonTerriers 12-20-2011 08:56 AM

Hand waving!

I am another Bernina 440 owner. Love it. Hubby got it for me for Christmas about 5 years ago. I wanted it specifically to use the Bernina Stitch Regulator; without it, I NEVER would have even attempted to do free motion quilting. The BSR takes a lot of practice, so don't be put off when your first attempts don't look like something in the Houston Quilt Show.

The 440 doesn't do windows, but that is my only complaint.

Enjoy your new machine and the family who loves you enough to give it to you.

RedGarnet222 12-20-2011 09:18 AM

I too have the bernina 440QE. It is a wonderful machine. You will enjoy it very much once you learn all the features and learn to use them. It was a truely wonderful gift! What a nice family.

MomtoBostonTerriers... Go to the main bernina site. They have many updates to download for windows there free. I had to download the windows 7 upgrade and now everything works fine.

I really love my 440 QE. I have to say, though, that the BSR is not my favorite item, although it was the reason I originally bought the machine. The stitches on BSR aren't as pretty as I like, and I have had some issues with the BSR skipping stitches. I really, really, really love this machine, though!
