I am in need of the Patchwork/Quilt Foot and have to decide between the plain and less expensive Number 37 and the fancier more expensive Number 57 that has a guide. So among those who have one or both of these Feet, I would love to know what you think:

I have the old Bernina but I recently found out that the straight stitch plate really helps you piece better. I used the straight stitch plate with the 37 foot (1/4 in foot). If I were making a purchase and did not have the straight stitch plate yet, I would definitely consider getting it. I didn't think one was necessary for years and found out that they do help. So I vote for straight stitch plate with the 37 foot. I have the quarter inch with the guide as well and don't use it.

I use the 34D and put my needle 2 clicks from the left. It gives me an accurate scant 1/4". I use Guideline Seam Guides. I have two rulers that measure a scant 1/4" and checked it out and it is a scant 1/4". I don't like the 57 because it's not a true scant 1/4".

I love both the 37 and the 57, they both have a place. Prices in my area are much higher than where you are at, I think I gave $65 for my 57. I have an old Bernina 930 and both feet work great. I am however going to try the 20 with 1 click to the right. This is MHO

I only have the #37 foot and I like it. I have often wondered if I would enjoy using one with a guide, but after reading the responses I think the #37 is the best foot for doing piecing.

I have both the #37 and #57 foot. I love my #57 foot. It is wonderful when making Drunkard's Path blocks. I would suggest you sign up for Bernina's online magazine Through the Needle,every issue they have coupons for their presser feet. A coupon for a different presser foot every magazine. It's free, too! The #57 foot is great when piecing, but the straight stitch plate is also great for piecing. If you buy a straight stitch, remember you can't use a zigzag stitch.

Keep in mind that the#57 foot is meant for piecing long seams - it isn't intended to be used when sewing across seams for other piecing. I have both but rarely use #57 - bought it so my grandchildren would have an easier time of stitching long seams.

Here is how much I hated the 37 on my Bernina - I would only piece on my little Janome gem because it has the guide. LOL I did buy the 57 for my Bernina 180 when it came out, but was told later not to use it due to the machine sewing a larger mm. The guide for the 57 would run over the feed dogs.

I've since purchased a different machine but would only buy it if it had a good 1/4" with a guide -which it does.

i love the #57....keeps me where i need to be!

I like the 37. I found that the 57 pulls the other fabric under it. (When I have sewing more that two different edges together.)
