Bernina 740
 

Does anyone have a Bernina 740? How do you like it? Any dislikes you have about? I'm thinking about buying one but would like some input first. Thanks in advance.

The new Berninas are very finicky as my friends who have them from the 500 series to the 830 have told me. I have an older Bernina that I love that isn't picky about thread or ever has tension issues. I won't spend thousands for a machine I have to baby or hope it sews right.

I would go test drive. I personally don't care for Bernina but many love them. For how expensive they are you want to make sure you love the machine. It is a large investment. I have seen some adore their Bernina and I have also seen some regret their purchase because they didn't bond with their machine. I don't believe any one brand is better than the other or that any one brands is suitable for everyone that's why it is good to try different machine. There are so many amazing machines on the market, juki, elna, janome, pfaff, brother, babylock, viking. All are a little different and have their own neat features and you might like some features more than others.

I bought the 580. There are a zillion screens you have to flip through to get where you want to go. The hoops are weird sizes. Yes, finicky.

Hi BusyLizzie, I like your name I had a Busy Lizzie doll when I was a little girl. I recently purchased the 740, less than a month ago, along with the straight stitch plate and the 97D foot. I bought it for the dual feed and the bigger harp space. The biggest adjustment for me is the 9mm width of the stitch plate. I have made two "complicated" quilt blocks on it and am pleased with the accuracy, I do sew slower on it than on my 530 which is 5mm. I do not use the guide on this one though and with my 530 I used the quarter inch foot with the guide. I am usually a slower stitcher though.. I am cutting fabric today sew my first quilt on it. What I do not like about it is that it is really heavy, but I am not planning on taking it anywhere, now that I have taken the guide classes. Hope this helps.

I have two Bernina from the 1000s line and love them both. Good work horses. Test drive it like you would a car.

There is a big difference between the 700 series and the 830. The 830 is a little finicky sometimes and there have been some issues. I got my mom the 750 and she loves it, I got that one because she has an 830 which will be mainly used for embroidery. I got the 710 because I didn't want embroidery - I can use my mom' s
