Bernina 740 and deciding what accesories to buy.
 

decided on this machine I'll be purchasing in a few days. I have an older Bernina now with on overlock foot I use to finish seams. I can't figure out which new foot to buy for this. Also. does anyone else have this machine and how would you rate it?

Isn't there a #2 overlock foot for the 740?

I have the Bernina 570QEE for about a year, and a 440 for 10 years before that. My retirement job is 1 day a week at a Bernina dealer/fabric store, and I have sewn on most of the current Bernina models. Within the current 700 series, the higher number, the more features/accessories it comes with. That said, the B740 comes with 5 feet: Reverse pattern #1C, Dual feed #1D, Slide Buttonhole #3A, Zipper #4D, and Open-toe #20C. If you use the overcasting stitch, you will want the Overlock foot #2A, it is sized for 9mm feed dogs. My other favorites for a quilter-obviously a 1/4" foot #97 or #97D, again sized for the 9mm feed dogs instead of the #37 foot. I love the #10 for edge stitching and stitch-in-the-ditch, the #23 for stitching around raw edge applique, the #29 (or a BSR) for free-motion, and a #71 8mm flat felling foot for machine sewing down binding. Also love my walking foot. So many excellent feet available but spendy; they do have 25% off several times a year. Make sure you dealer is one that you are comfortable with and that they offer the guide classes you are entitled to. Have fun with it!

Guide classes have been essential to me on both of my Berninas. I probably wouldn't get nearly as much out of them if I hadn't taken the guide classes. These machines do so much!

Be sure that you try to do things all by yourself on this machine before you buy it.

I have a 710 and I LOVE the even feed on the new 700 series. I had a 730 (older) and upgraded simply for this feature

I own two Janomes and have been on the fence about switching to Bernina 700 series so I'll be interested how you like it. Skyangel gave a good list of feet and I use a 1/4" foot often on my machines so if it doesn't come with one you might put that on your list. Also if you are interested in doing any FMQ ruler work, you might consider that one.

Thank you for all the replies. I bought the machine two days ago and love it.. Problem. All was fine and then for reasons I can't figure out the needle position is out of alignment. About 3 ticks off. I mean when the screen says its lined up a zero it is really at position 3. Didn't know it till I broke a needle all over the place. I have been so incredibly gentle with this new machine that I don't think its anything I did. I was using the stitch regulator to try out the FMQ, which is wonderful. It stitches beautiful. When I went back to regular sewing the needle position was messed up. I guess I call the Bernina dealer tomorrow unless anyone knows how to fix this. I have a knot in my stomach over this.

I purchased the 770 recently and love it. Just took the first class and really learned a lot. They did show how to do some things with out the specialty feet (overlock) so hold off additional purchases until you attend. Call your dealer right away and have that needle looked at... I am sure it is nothing major and you will be back on track!!!!
