As for the BSR, they are spendy and pointless. Last time i heard about $900. You can practice on a lot of very nice fabric for 900. Or crappy fabric?
Practice is what makes the quilting work, finding your own speed and flow.
SOme gadgets are wonderful, I love my rotary cutter and ruler and some of my feet, but not all of them.

I disagree the BSR is "pointless". I love mine. Worth every penny.

I too have a Bernina 440QE, it comes with the stitch regulator. I absolutely love it!!!!

I didn't see anyone mention the Bernina 430. I bought it specifically because I could upgrade with either the BSR or embroidery module (or both). I bought a used BSR on eBay, had it updated by my dealer and it works great. The 430 is pretty much the same as the 440EQ except the 440 has some additional stitches (including the one that looks like hand quilting) and may have a slightly larger throat area. I love my 430. I haven't used the BSR too much lately but need to get back into practice. I've heard the BSR described as "training wheels" and that many quilters stop using it after they develop their skills. I'm not to that point yet!!!

I have the same machine and was wondering how you use it without useing the BSR for FMQ
