Bernina BSR

When I bought Bernice secondhand she came with a heap of extra feet including a walking foot and also a BSR. Well now, the purchase was about a year or so ago and there has been the odd moment of bravery when I have carefully taken the BSR box out of the drawer, placed it with great reverence onto the sewing table and gazed at it with awe......then opened the lid and gazed at it some more.........and then put it away.

Today I finally drew a big breath and had a "go". Oh my, oh my, oh my, be still my beating heart and why the blooming heck did I leave it sooooo long and feel soooooo scared of it!! What fun I had.......and now I can't wait to finish my current project with its straight line stitching as I have a gazillion ideas zooming around in my head......and they're all curvy!!!!! :D

Good for you I love mine also , keep having fun .

My BSR enabled me to gain confidence in my FMQing. Now I only need it if I am doing micro designs to prevent small stitches.

Try the BSR in the 2 mode. It allows the needle to move only when you move the fabric. I find it gives me much better control. Also thread the bobbin thread through the little hole at the end of the bobbin case. That seems to help on the tension.

When I bought my Bernina 1530, this device didn't exist. Neither did the 1/4" foot. If you ever wear out your walking foot (I did), it only cost about $25 to get it fixed by a Bernina technician.

I use my BSR on my machine on the Bernina Quilt frame. It sure makes free motion much easier. I don't use it on my "domestic" machine - 440 QE because I have difficulty handling a quilt on the smaller machine. I found out a couple years ago that you should take your BSR in when you have your machine serviced because they will update the software in it! Who knew? Have fun!

Ok....I'm still on a non-computerized machine. What is a BSR?

Tartan 12-03-2015 05:52 AM

BSR stands for Bernina Stitch Regulator. It helps regulate the size of the stitches when quilting.

I use my BSR a lot! I've never had the software updated for it though.

ruby2shoes 12-03-2015 11:13 AM

SuzieQuilts: yep, mode 2 was terrific, really liked it.

Eeeek...I need to have its software updated???

ruby2shoes, you're inspiring me! Mine's been in its box for almost three years, as I'm too scared to use it.

Thanks for the encouragement.

What is a BSR foot for a Bernina?

IBQUILTIN 12-04-2015 11:24 AM

How exciting for you. It is so much fun to realize we can actually DO something new. Have fun with your new toy

I found when I first got my Bernina 550 I used the BSR and it gave me the confidence to do some projects without it. Glad you are using yours and having fun with it.

It was refreshing to read that others thought about but didn't use their BSR's. I have one and will now have to give it a try after all of you said how wonderful it worked for you. A big thanks.

I tend to forget to use the BSR. Iwish it was able to fit in the wardrobe to remind me of it existence. My free motion is better with it but not bad without.

The BSR did not exist when I purchased my Artista 200. I ordered the BSR as soon as it came on the market. By the time my LQS received and installed it, I was packed and moving to Tennessee. I never had the lesson on how to use it and it set in the box for several years. Like you, when I got it out and tried it, I wondered why I had waited so long. Now I am addicted to the BSR. I love it and use it constantly. When I purchased it, I thought it extremely expensive, but it has been worth every cent.

I love my BSR I can do free motion embroidery, thread painting and quilting in the ditch with it I also quilt all of my own quilts and I have the 440QE don't know how I ever got along without it

It's a stitch regulator so the FMQ stitches are the same size. I think the BSR = Bernina Stotch Regulator. I don't have one but have heard/read about them.

The BSR was the reason I bought my Bernina! I was going to get a new machine but wanted to reserch them, try them, etc. I went to a local quilt show and the the local Bernina dealer was there with the BSR setup. Tried it, order it on the spot. Never have regretted the purchase!

faykilgore 12-06-2015 05:52 AM

The BSR was the reason I bought my Bernina, also. Loved it when I demo'd it. Now, hate it and never use it. I probably haven't practiced with it enough. By the time I bought it, I'd done enough FMQ to get fairly smooth without it, so again, it's probably a lack of practice thing.

Fay if you ever tried it and got use to it you would love it try it for some thread play or free motion embroidery there is a great class on craftsy for thread play

I absolutely love my BSR and when I bought my Baby Lock Tiara, I sprang for the Tru-Stitch stitch regulator expecting it to work similarly. Boy was I WRONG. Come to find out, Bernina's BSR is equal to none and made me realize, when I have enough room for a Longarm, it will be a Bernina.

purplefiend 12-09-2015 12:50 PM

I tried the BSR at my local Bernina dealer, just couldn't get along with it as I learned to FMQ without one. My dealer said that I didn't need it. :)
