Bernina Problem with ending seam
I have a Bernina 830 Electronic that I love but the problem that I am having is when I end a seam on a block and begin to sew another in chain style the machine won't let you leave enough of a tail between blocks so that when you clip them apart they do not come apart where the seam started. Does anyone else have this problem. Is there some setting on the machine that would allow the machine to sew a few stitches between blocks without bunching up the seam.

Try putting your needle in up position, then tug a bit after finishing one block, allowing some thread to come out, then put in next set and sew to end, again tug for a little thread tail, then insert and sew, etc...?

I have the 820 and have the same problem, and can't chain piece. Thanks Geri for the tip, I'll have to try that.

I have an 880 and can chain piece w/o problems. It should be pretty close computer-wise to the other 8 series machines. Is it a new problem? Would you be able to call your Bernina dealer?

When you come to the end of one block hit the lock stitch button that looks like a pretzel kind of. It will lock your threads and then you continue sewing. I do it at the beginning of each block too.

I have the 830 and chain piece all the time. It doesn’t matter if the needle is down or up. I have no problems at all. I would make an appointment with your dealer and take your 830 and have them show you what you are doing wrong.

Just want to mention that using cotton thread in top and bobbin (instead of polyester thread) helps prevent threads from slipping out of seam ends. You still need some length on the threads, though.

That old 830 is a remarkable machine!
It's probably something simple. I wonder if the tensions are too tight? Or maybe there's a burr on the hook. Another thought is that maybe you need a smaller needle, or a new needle? I hope you're able to get it sewing right. |
Just to be clear, as we talking about the new Bernina 830 or the old one (badged 830 Record Electronic as I remember) from back in the day?
Darn Bernina had to repeat their numbers for their machines. It's so confusing. |
I just sew off the patches 4-5 stitches while pressing the block to the back with my finger. This locks the stitches as well.
