Hello, I am looking for someone that knows how to repair Bernina sewing machines. I have had one man to look at it and he told me my machine was old and worn our. I bought it in 1985 and I have used it. I called the dealer (who is retired) that I purchased the machine from and she suggested that I try to locate someone in the Houston, Texas area who repairs them. Can any one out there help me. I have several quilts that my Mother, Grandmother and 2 Aunts pieced together and I want to get them done for the grand children.

Glenda do you happen to know what's wrong with it?

Do a google search on bernina repair shops in your area, bet you'll find one. Good luck

I can help you out. First a Bernina machine is never old and worn out. 1985 it probably is a 1130 or something close. Don't ever let go of it. There are 3 places in Houston that are called It's A Stitch. They are Bernina dealers, where I bought both my Bernina's. There is one on Westheimer in west Houston, one on 1960 in NW Houston and one on 1960 also in NW Houston but on the other end of 1960. Let me know what area you want to go to and I give you a couple of other names.

Thank you so much. For one thing it will not make the decorative stitches correctly, the lights are both out, and some time it will go backwards. The machine is 1230 and has really been a great one. I love it, with the names of the ones you have given me, (which I copied) I also have the name of another person Melvin Ballard 1923 Hamlin valley Dr.
Houston, Texas and his phone number. He said he has been attended services for 17 1/2 years. Is this one you were talking about. He also has a 1 day evergency service and hopefully I can get that and he can at least let me know about the machine. It is about a 2 hour drive from here, but that is o.k.
Thank you again for your information Glenda Texas

The only Bernina sewing machine repair place here is in Beaumont. They are the ones who said it was old and worn out. It is a 1230 that I got in 1985. I have not checked in Lake Charles, which is only about an hour drive, but I have found some in Houston which will be about 2 hour drive. I just want to fiind a dependable person to check this machine over. Thank you for your help Glenda in Texas

I've used It's a Stitch here in Houston and like someone said there are several locations. McDougal is also good. I can't imagine that any Bernina is really worn out, especially the ones made when you bought yours. I have one made then, too. Good luck in finding someone!

I have a Bernina 910 that I bought new in 1986 that I have used and used. A month ago I had to have a $16.00 repair done on the foot pedal. Until then I have never done anything to it other than having it cleaned, and I didn't even do that as often as I should have, because I didn't trust anyone with my "baby". I have always done the oiling and cleaning that I could do according to the manual. I can not afford a new fancy machine, but if I could I would still NEVER get rid of this machine. Every time I sit and sew I fall in love with it all over again. I just recieved a walking foot for it for Christmas, my DH wondered if spending the money on such an old machine was wise, I didn't hesitate in assuring him that my machine would be used for many years yet, and that I would definately use the walking foot.

I am so glad that you contacted me,I just can't believe that my machine is "doomed". The man at the Bernina place in Beaumont told me it was old and worn out. I bought the machine in the spring of 1985, a few months before our first granddaughter was born. I just feel that it can be repaired.
Thank you again, glenda in texas

It's A Stitch is a Bernina dealership with 3 locations in the greater Houston area. Here is the link that has the maps http://www.itsastitchonline.com/maps.htm

I have only been to the Humble store, so can't say anything about the other two locations, but the employees in Humble are friendly and knowledgeable.

Hi, I live in Sugar Land and can't say enough about how great the Nasa area Sew Contempo has been about helping me with my purchase of a used Viking Designer 1.......not even from them, but from one of their customers. I've been totally trashed by some other retailers who were miffed that I didn't purchase a machine from them. Gee, they forgot that I still need software, thread, stabilizer, etc. - thousands of dollars worth of stuff. As soon as I purchased the Designer 1 I took it right to Sew Contempo for servicing for a fresh start. Good job and they treated me as if I had been shopping there forever. They were exceedingly patient and helpful with my software selection whereas I was treated rudely at my local store. They serviced my machine long before I expressed interest in software. I spoke with the technician. He seems very knowledgeable. This store also advised against a costly upgrade to my machine which the other store was more than happy to do for an inflated price. After reading the forums, I find that the upgrade would have been a mistake and that Sew Contempo guided me away from a hundreds of dollar disaster. I will be taking my much loved Pfaff 1229 to them for servicing. I don't trust her to just anyone. I spoke with someone from the other Bernina store in Houston that has the 3 locations. They seem to know what they are doing and were very helpful over the phone. You might get a kick out of bringing you machine over when they have a class scheduled that you like, or making a trip to Fabrics, Etc for a class or browsing while you are in the area. P.S. If you haven't already decided on someone, it seems that a lot of dealers are having big sales in the next weeks leading into Super Bowl weekend. Might want to check on the sale schedule before making the drive over.

Thank you for your information. I am keeping it. On Thursday I am going to meet with a man, Melvin Ballard, who is in the 1960 West area near IH45. He was recommended by the lady I bought my 1230 from, she was a Bernina dealer at that time. I will keep your information so if I he can't figure out what is wrong with it, the I contact these other. You said this place was located near Nasa. When we had to leave for hurricane Rita, I think I visited this store. We were in Deer Park and my sister-in-law took me over near Nasa. It was a large story and I was able to get needles for all three machines. I took my Bernina, Sincer and my Brother embroidery machines with me. Thank you again for your help. Glenda C------I also have the 1230 and I have never had a machine I loved so much. Mine did that once and I had to have it repaired. They told me to go through the decorative stitches every month or so and stitch each one of them so that they don't get "stuck". I haven't had the problem since and that's been several years. All Bernina dealers tell me NEVER to get rid of that machine because it's still made with all steel parts. Most others are not.

Hope you get it fixed!

sewgray 04-09-2010 01:08 PM

Glenda let us know how you came out with your machine.
I think I know about that dealer in Beaumont, if it's the one I'm thinking of they are just jerks alround. That machine still sells for $800 to $1200. They probably just wanted to get your machine for resale.
