Best batting for a baby quilt
 

Hi,
I tried the search engine but didn't find much help there so I am turning to you! In your opinion, what is a good, easy care batting for a baby quilt? I don't want the parents to have to fuss over the care of this and I'd like for it to be used regularly - as a floor quilt if they wish. I am found of the Quilter's Request batting. The baby lives in New England. I will machine quilt it.

Quilters Dream is my favorite batting. I've liked all of their varieties that I have tried and I think any of them would hold up very well for a baby quilt. It does not need special care, in my opinion. I've used their polyester in two quilts and found it very nice to work with, quilts up nicely, probably dries faster than cotton. Generally though, I use the cotton batting, just be cause I like all cotton.

Recently I've been using Mountain Mist Cream Rose batting. I don't know how it holds up as I've only used it on the last 3 quilts I've made and they were all gifts but I like the weight of it. It's 100% cotton. I like how it makes the quilt feel when it's made. It seems to be softer than Warm & Natural (which is what I have mainly used in the past. I bought mine at Jo-Ann's when it is on sale.

I like wool batting for baby quilts. It is so light and soft and very easy to quilt through.

I like to use a natural fiber --wool or cotton. Natural fibers breathe, unlike synthetics like polyester. In case of a fire--hopefully that doesn't happen--natural fibers are not as flammable and don't burn at as high a heat.

I only use Hobbs Tuscany, either 100% cotton, 80% cotton & 20% wool or when extra loft is needed, 100% wool. All three launder nicely. However,before using 100% wool, it's a good idea to make sure mom or dad aren't allergic first. A wool allergy might indicate a similar allergy in baby.

Quilter's Dream and Request batting is the highest quality of batting that I know of, that is why it is priced higher than the norm. If these parents want this baby quilt to last a lifetime, they have to be careful with how they wash it with what detergents and to stay away from a hot dryer. I would include some simple washing instructions.

For me it depends on the area the baby lives and how it's going to be used. BAby through toddler and up and as a security blanket. I agree with ManiacQuilter2 please include washing instructions. No caregiver/mother/grandparent wants to give "special' washing care time.
