Best embroidery thread?

After seeing the beautiful embroidery work some of you put into your quilts, I became inspired to try my hand at machine embroidery. I found a Brother PE 770 on ebay as an open box for less than $600! It has never been used as all it's pieces are still in plastic and taped in place. I saw that Joanns has all their thread 50% off on Black Friday and was wondering if Sulky is still considered a good brand of embroidery thread to use. I'm sure like all things quilters will have a dozen opinions on which is the best and where is the best place to find it, but I would love some guidance. Thanks in advance.

I use Sulky and Maderia embroidery thread. I have used others but these 2 are my favorites.

Enjoy your machine.

I use Floriani and Isacord. Like them both. The Floriani is a little shinier and sometimes shows more brilliantly.

I feel that you do get better performance from better thread. I love Madeira or Robison Anton on my machine - and yes I do have some other threads but feel that the look and shine is better from these two as stitched on my machine.

It also depends on your machine. My recommendation is that you try some of each brand - and see what you like and see what you machine "likes".

I've used Madeira, ARC and Sulky. I've never had one that I didn't like yet. I bet you're excited having an embroidery machine!

I like Isacord thread. It does not tear so easy when I embroider on my Bernina Artista 185.

I also have a Brother embrodery machine SE350 amd I was told that Robison Anton works best with the Brother machines. That is the only brand I've tried. Good luck.

I like Isacord best, but I have used Sulky and Madeira as well. Isacord just seems stronger.

I've used many brands and found different ways to make my machine play nice with the different brands. I found that I've had the most trouble with black breaking, regardless of brand. Rayon is shiniest but if it is going to be bleached you should use polyester. Have fun

I also have a Brothers Embroidery machine Quattro. I was advised NOT to use Sulky threads as they cause a lot of breakage and fuzz in your machine. I use Maderia, Hemmingworth, Robinson Anton or Florini, depending on what I plan to do with it. Have Fun

I like metro, marathon because they are beautiful and more inexpensive. I have also used sulky and gutter man with good results.

katesnanna 11-20-2011 04:41 PM

I have used quite a few different brands on my MC10000. Some I already had, some I've bought since getting the machine and a lot came with the machine. Black is the only color I've ever had any issue with and that includes RA. I have also found when I get near the end of a spool I can have some issues. All in all though I don't have many problems but I sure have a lot of fun. You will too. Have a good look around the internet before spending a fortune on designs. I like Embroidery Library and Adorable Applique but have picked up a lot of free designs that have worked wonderfully. Bunnycups is also a good site and they give their retired sets free.
You are about to embark on a wonderful journey. Enjoy.

I use Maderia and Floriani. Since Floriani is polyester it will hold up better than the rayon. I also use DMC cotton embroidery thread. Hard to find but like if also.

Candace 11-20-2011 06:05 PM

Sulky is rayon and
I prefer poly like Isacord. Poly is colorfast in the wash using Clorox and rayon isn't. Very important on items that will be used and washed often!

amma 11-20-2011 06:10 PM

I prefer polyester, it is strong, doesn't shrink or fade either :) :) :)

Tink's Mom 11-20-2011 06:10 PM

I like Madeira and Robison Anton the best...I don't have shredding problems with them...Sulky and my Machine really don't see eye to eye...
I prefer the polyester in both brands because they are more washable....

I agree what someone else suggested and find out what your machine likes best..otherwise you will waste money. I have tried some of the better threads and my machine doesn't like them.. Good luck! Fun Fun Fun!

QuiltnNan 11-20-2011 06:18 PM

congrats on the great deal you found

jemma 11-20-2011 06:47 PM

robinson anson is my favorite i have a pfaff--if you use cotton for FSL clean out your bobbin frequently

bettysew 11-20-2011 08:19 PM

I use Floriani and Isacord. Floriani is more has more shine to it. Isacord is very pretty and strong. Use some Madeira which seems to fray more in my Brother machines but looks really pretty.

bettysew 11-20-2011 08:19 PM

I use Floriani and Isacord mostly. Floriani has more shine to it. Isacord is very pretty and strong. Use some Madeira hich seems to fray more in my Brother machines but looks really pretty.

finding your favorite thread nis nhalf of the fun. Black or any really dark thread does break the most often. Also the note on rayon does bleach even fade faster and poly is best for much laundred items.

reginalovesfabric 11-21-2011 06:32 AM

I use Arc and my machine loves it

juliea9967 11-21-2011 07:18 AM

I think Sulky is OK as long as you don't buy the little tiny spools. Those are twisted tight on the spool, and when you thread them through your machine they still have all those little twists in them. The thread is very prone to getting wrapped around itself or parts of your machine.
My favorite threads are Isacord and RA. If you go to Shoppers Rule they have some great deals on the RA thread.

Nanamoms 11-21-2011 04:11 PM

I have a Brother PE700II and it likes the Mettler Poly. It does NOT like the Sulky rayon. Thread breaks and lint builds up. I also use Metro and my machine likes it too.

babyboomerquilter 11-21-2011 05:00 PM

I have a Singer, and Sulky and Maderia seems to work best. Maybe if you try a couple different ones and see which one works best for you.

romanojg 11-27-2011 01:44 PM

So far I've used Sulky; Jenny Haskins, RA, Prensia and they all work great in my machine. I've heard that some machines are finicky but my Ruby has no problems with them. I even use serger thread when doing free standing lace because it's sturdier.
