The Janome Gem 760 is what I use for classes but before I got the 6600 it was all I used. It is a workhorse and does nearly everything the 6600 does.

I have a Singer Featherweight (221) that was made in 1960 and it is absolutely wonderful for taking to classes or taking in our camper. It has a wonderful perfect straight stitch. I wouldn't give it up for anything. Besides, it is always a conversation starter.

I love my Babylock Grace. I've been using it a couple of years.

The Janome platinum. All of the feet will be interchangeable.

I must agree the 760 platinum is a GREAT machine and sturdier than most in this class. passport is very desirable too w/ the cutter and generous stitch package. I think the price is about the same but the 760 has a proven track-record.

If you can find an Elna Lotus (ca 1950) you won't be sorry!

I have a Bernette. Cost me $184. I leave it in my car. I go to "sit and sews" every week and it is so handy. I isn't fancy, but has a great quality of stitch, which is all I care about. It has only a few features, but I use it only for piecing, so it's perfect.

I love my featherweight

A few years ago I was shopping for light weight machine to haul to classes and the one I found the most positives on has already been mentioned - the Brother CS6000i. I've been delighted with it! It has many features of higher priced machines and it sews beautifully. When I purchased mine it was under $170. Considering the investment in my main machine (Viking SE) although I'll be sad when this one eventually quits I've more than gotten my money's worth already. I think I ordered mine from Wal-Mart on-line and had it delivered (n/c) to the store. They seem to be available through several businesses.
