Thank you ghost for your batik comparison! "My goal was somewhat narrow for that test (mixing with batiks), but I have used all but one of the brands I listed above. If color choice, price, and availability were the same for all of them, I'd go with Michael Miller, RJR, Northcott, Marcus Bros, Bella, and Kona...in that order. However, because those factors are NOT equal, I usually fall back on Kona for anything but batik combo works. " I have been pondering this too! |

You all from the UK should open your home to a quilting buddy for a week to spend the night (bed and breakfast) while they tour England. In exchange that person could (for the rest of her life), receive your packages for you, wash the fabric so it is no longer new and send it on to you at yard sale price as used fabric. |
I like both Moda Bella (get It from Missouristarquiltco) and Kona Cotton (get that on sale at JoAnn).

It's really personal taste - my opinion one this changes with the wind. Generally I like shirtings.

There is also Cherrywood Fabrics that are to die for; they are so soft and have a suede-like feel and appearance. They are hand-dyed,l I believe.

I got a stack of Kona solids for my prize for having the first R-b-R at my LQS. I haven't tried any yet but I've noticed the lower thread count. I do applique and had students having trouble turning Kona black when I was teaching a class. It would start to fray on smaller pieces where it was cut close to the turning edge. So, great colors but perhaps not as tightly woven as needed for applique.

I prefer Moda Bella Solids. The colors are a wide variety and shrinkage minimal. I don' think all Kona cittons are of equal quality.

I like Moda's solid more so than Kona as once I used a Kona solid and it shrunk like the dickens and bled too. Instead of solids though have you thought about a blender fabric? I like Maywoods "ShadowPlay" and Connecting Threads "Mirage". Both can be considered a solid with a little texture to them. They almost look exact too when you put them side by side so I keep them on the same shelf together. With Connecting Threads you can't beat the price either. I have their entire collection and 30 yds of their cream for background use.
