The reason for puting starched and sprinkled materal in the fridge was to keep it from meldew ,leaving sprinkled materal out where it's room temp. will cause meldew

Hi, I just checked out Joanns for the Mary Ellens Best Press and It's on sale for $29 a gallon. Anne

CarrieAnne 05-15-2010 01:14 PM

Ive just bought the Dollar Store stuff!

GrammaNan 05-15-2010 01:35 PM

I also use Mary Ellen's best press. I love it. I am considering making my own and using Lavender essential oil for fragrance but I want to try it on something other than the projects I am currently working on.

I remember my mother using the powdered starch and boiling it until it was thick and then dipping clothes in it before hanging them out to dry. Then the next day she ironed all the starched clothes. Some she sprinkled with water and put in the refrigerator before she ironed them. I have no idea why that was done. I know the clothes were sprinkled with water while ironing. I have her sprinkle top! She used it with a RC Cola bottle.

I can tell you why. keeps it from drying out until she can get to it. My mother put them in large bags all springled and rolled up in the chest freezer. Can't get them all done in one day, tomarrow is another day. Theresse

I'm a Sta Flo gal, too! I mix 1/2 water and 1/2 sta flow...put it in a squirt bottle and spray it on. I let it ALMOST dry and then iron...cuts down on any flaking. Love it, use it all the time, but now my grocery store isn't carrying it. I'm on the look out!

I use Magic sizing too. It works very well.

It is especially nice to starch or size the fabric when you are appliqueing. Plus, when you finish a block and starch or size it, it looks so nice and fresh.

sewmuchfun 05-15-2010 04:31 PM

whats your recipe for starch?

Dorrie 05-15-2010 04:59 PM

Thanks for all the info on starching. I love this forum and have learned so much.

I'm wondering how in the world I quilted for EVER without knowing the benefits of starching!?! You can bet I'll be on the starch isle tomorrow! Just kidding...I really did learn about the benefits on the QB though. Thanks everyone. It does help.

barbrdunn 05-15-2010 10:38 PM

I starch most everything. It is especially great when I am sewing small pieces, and HST's. Aside from accurate cutting and matching corners, starching allows you to effectively finger press seams when you are chain piecing. It saves lots of time.

I just discovered (well tried out) Mary Ellen's Best Press....I'll never go back!

so, i am sticking with the liquid starch i can get at the grocery store for less than $3 per gallon. i can mix my own strength, and spend the savings on more fabric. i do get flakes if i spray on too much at one time but they brush off and i move on.

and the tip about spraying and pressing on the back of the fabric is right on target. it does make a big difference.

Patrice, If you have signed up for the Joann's coupons on line, when they have their 50% off - you can order a gallon of MaryEllen's Bet Press, with shipping for under $26.00. While not cheap, you get what you pay for, and it does last........

Grandma Phyl 05-16-2010 09:33 AM

wal-Mart carries the sizing under $1 its in a blue can, use it all the time love it.

Never used starch before... but I think when I do; I will use your invention for sure!
Gesh, I didn't know you were suppose to let it dry!

linnajune 05-16-2010 04:05 PM

My Mama always told me that if you starch anything (crochet, linens etc) and store it with the starch in it that it will cause the fabric to rot eventually. Anytime I store something that I will not be using regularly, I always try to make sure that it doesnot have starch in it.

Lynn Luker 05-16-2010 04:12 PM

I'm another one who just started using starch after reading this thread! I found the Sta-Flo at Walmart. I can practically shuffle my 4" blocks like playing cards! My military SIL says he used to use that for his uniforms. (new ones don't need ironing) I'm convinced! Thanks to you all.

IBQUILTIN 05-16-2010 06:48 PM

My BGF and I buy Best Press direct from Mary Ellen's website, it is still a bit pricey, but we usually split the cost on a gallon at a time, and its not so bad. Lasts quite a while, and you can make it as stiff as you want by repeating the sprays with it.

zz-pd 05-16-2010 08:38 PM

I get mine at the dollar store. God bless. Penny

vschieve 05-17-2010 07:01 AM

I still have a box of the powdered Faultless; I do the boiling and go by the directions as to how stiff I want my fabric to be and apply the tablespoons full accordingly. I hung my clothes out and then I take them off the line when they are just damp, right for ironing and put them in a plastic sack and start ironing. If I don't finish the group, I put them in the refrigerator to avoid molding.

I like the Sta-Flo concentrate too. Would like to find fabric sizing concentrate in a bottle too. Anyone know where I could find it?

Sharon321 05-18-2010 02:13 PM

I finally found Sta-Flo concentrate, at my local WalMart.

craftybear 05-27-2010 03:17 PM

Right now, Joann's website has the gallon jugs of Best Press on sale for $29.39. It has every scent of Best Press on sale including the unscented.

Right now, there is also a coupon code you can use for free shipping. It's PIA160. However, the free shipping is only for orders over $35.00.

I just ordered it from Joanne's for 21.00 plus shipping of 5.00. Thanks for the heads up - great price.

Niagara now makes a spray starch with a fresh linen fragrance. I get mine at Wal-mart for about $1.59 instead of the $8.99 Mary Ellens Best Press. It works just as well for me and the price difference is a real plus too.

JackieG 05-28-2010 08:56 PM

Magic Sizing has my vote. Sometimes starch is too much and I have heard about the bug thing with starch.

ConnieF 05-29-2010 02:28 AM

Mary Ellens Best Press or fabric sizing NOT starch.
If you wnat it stiffer you just repeat the process....
