best tutorial for flying geese?
Can anyone recommend a good tutorial for this? I have tried multiple different ways of making these crazy things, and they never come out the same, and nine times out of ten, the point gets cut off by the seam. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Of course, I could just continue to avoid making them!

I use Eleanor Burns method. Yes, I did buy the rulers, but the geese always turn out perfectly. :-) Not sure if there's a Youtube or not.

Here is a video done by the Missouri Quilt Co. /www.bing.com/videos/search?q=flying+geese+instructions&FORM=VIRE1#view =detail&mid=0154291866ABE702AFC40154291866ABE702AF C4

Thank you for the websites. I'm going to go check them out. Rebeljane - that looks like the PERFECT way to do them, but unfortunately I've already cut out the squares and rectangles. Ugh.
|
Since you have already cut out the squares and rectangles, there is one method I heard of that may help. After you mark the diagonal line on the square, pinned it to the rectangle and sewed on the line, you press the square back, but you DO NOT cut the excess off. I don't remember the name of the person who came up with this, but she said that by cutting the excess, you are cutting off the part of the rectangle that gives you the correct size. I guess you could cut off the excess of the square and leave the rectangle whole. That would eliminate some bulk without losing the size.

I consider myself an accomplished quilter, and have made many geese. I agree with MaureenNJ - I purchased Deb Tucker's FG ruler, and love love love it.

I learned two things late last night when I went into my stash closet. First, I have GOT to get more organized so I know what I have. I actually have Eleanor Burns' Flying Geese rules...duh! Second, I know when to throw in the towel. I discovered that I have more of the fabrics that I'm using for this quilt, and I'm just going to start over, rather than continue to pull my hair out!

michelleoc, I have been quilting over 25 years and I am STILL trying to get organized !!! |
Eleanor Burns method by far is the easiest and best.

Hi michelleoc!
We like the Lynn Graves foundation paper for Flying Geese Located on Ladyfingers website here: http://ladyfingerssewing.com/shoppin...roduct_id=3580 :) |
This one is super easy! No rulers or gadgets needed, no bias edges and no waste! I just make them a bit bigger and trim to size.

I cannot make a flying geese that isn't wonky unless I use Ricky Tims method. You have to have the pieces cut out, so you are in luck. Google it. I don't know how to put it on this post. But it is foolproof. I promise.

Check on Bonnie Hunter's website Quiltville.com she recommends a ruler ( I have it - just can't remember name) and it really works. BTW it's not her ruler and she doesn't profit from the sale either.

I agree with y'all. No matter how I make flying geese, they won't all come out perfect. The only solution for me is to make them larger and cut them down with Deb's ruler. It works.
http://www.patchpieces.com/files/flyinggeese.pdf Its the same piecing method as Deb uses, but it has the formula for cutting sizes. This is nice when you have an odd size, or as I sometimes to, I WING it...Maybe using up a panel and I need a few flying geese to fit. You would have to trim down with a regular ruler, tho. If my geese measurements match up with Deb's finished geese, I prefer her ruler. |
Another vote for Ricky Tims video.

I practised various methods this weekend and decided I liked the Deb Tucker way the best - can be done without a ruler, but I love gadgets so I ordered her Wing Clipper rulers!
