Best tutorial for quilt as you go?

I have not done QAYG and would like to try it.
Which tute would you think is the easiest?
I have looked at several but can't decide on
the best.
TIA,
Elaine

Have you had a look at some of the ones of the board? http://www.quiltingboard.com/tutoria...s-t115627.html

Have you looked at the string quilt tutorial by Ditter, this is also on the quilt board. I think that one is a good one I guess it depends on the type of top your making. Good luck!

I've done one with dresden plates, and I used this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ji8BLS2rNHA
It came out pretty good, only suggestion I have is to use the same fabric for the backing and the strips that will be on the back, and matching bobbin thread because the stitching is not always going to land on the strips!

The following is how I have done all my Queen and King size quilts.

1. Complete top in 3 sections.<O:p></O:p>
2. Back is to be completed as a whole<O:p></O:p>
3. Batting is to be cut into 3 equal sections<O:p></O:p>
4. Sandwich the center section of the top, 1/3 of the batting in the middle of backing.<O:p></O:p>
5. Quilt this section <O:p></O:p>
6. Lay one of the side sections on top of the center section with right sides together. Pull the backing out of the way. I usually pin the 2 sections together.<O:p></O:p>
7. Sew these two pieces together the same seam width as the rest of the quilt.<O:p></O:p>
8. Pull the backing and top out of the way and zig zag a new section of batting to the center section of batting<O:p></O:p>
9. Quilt this section from the center section out having the bulk of the quilt to the left side of the machine.<O:p></O:p>
10. Repeat numbers 6,7, 8, 9<O:p></O:p>
11.Add any boarders and quilt each boarder.<O:p></O:p>
12.Finish and bind.<O:p></O:p>

I believe that the gourmetquilter has quilt as you go on her youtube videos.

I learned QAYG from Leah Day, as part of her Quilt Along and found her instructions very easy to follow. I have a British version of the link, so it might be best if you Google it - Leah Day quilt along 7 QAYG.

Made my first one following gourmetquilter. So easy and happy with results.

I haven't tried this one but watched it several times. She does a good job of explaining and it combines embroidery.

I think this will work better.

While watching this video, I got the idea to make a QAG using her method, and using batting and backing instead of a foundation. This worked really well because I cut the backing at 14" x14", the batting at 13" x 13", and trim the finished block to 12" x 12". Works wonderful, and since I am working with scraps, (cut 2.5" wide) not much waste. I have been using leftover batting in them also.

To join the squares, I use the method in the video below. I use 3" strips, folded in half, and when I get ready to attach the "sashing" to the next square, I use school glue to position them on one side, iron, flip it over and glue the sashing strip to the back. I stitch on both sides of the sashing so it looks even. Fun and done quick. I do them in quarters so only one really long sashing.

The first one I did is below. It is diagonal sewn and straight set. The one I am working on is stright set, and will be done to look like a weave quilt. Wish me luck. I like working with a twelve inch block for these so that any "extra" blocks can be used in scrappys together. I will continue to experiment with QAG ideas because I like the fact that they are quick and everything fits. Excuse all my wrinkles, it was already boxed for shipment, when I realized I had forgot to take a picture. A quick ride in the dryer and it was fine. I even made a pillow to match using the same method, but I used shorter strips and put a border on it.

I like to use the method shown on the Welsh Quilter website with a few minor variations of my own:

I like Leah Day's method.

I'm planning to try this method but I might have to take a look at all the links here too. Maybe I'll find something better.

I have not done any of my own quilting of quilts, only piecing tops; but your method makes sense and your quilt is gorgeous! It looks like you used batiks, which I love and what a perfect pattern. Would you share the pattern name please?

This is the method I use from the Gourmet Quilter: Technique #74. Works for me.

Anybody ever use the Georgia Bonesteel method. I learned this one many years ago. She had a TV show and also published several books, but I haven't heard of her for several years.

Thank you so much for posting this way, I'm getting to the point of the sashing on my current QAYG, last one I followed The Gourmet Quilters way. Your post I think will make it even easier for me. TYTYTY

Since I have trouble sewing a straight line, this method allows me to make a pretty, and sturdy quilt, even if I do sew lines like a drunken sailor! Lol!
