Best way to English Paper Piecing (EPP) a hexagon with two fabric??

What is the best way to EPP a hexagon with two fabrics? I have figured out how to do this with half-hexagons (cut the template in half and proceed as usual). However, I am unsure as to the best way to proceed when the shapes are different. Below is a picture of two hexagons, with two different fabrics, that I am working on.
I can create two EPP templates that make up the whole hexagon. It is easy to baste the fabric onto the smaller piece, but I can't figure out how to baste the fabric onto the bigger piece since it has the concave area. I have tried appliqueing the second (smaller) fabric onto a whole hexagon (basted with the first fabric). But, it is time consuming, thick (two layers of fabric) and not as 'perfect' in appearance as the whole hexagons. I am hoping someone has a suggestion on how to do this! Thanks in advance! |
Mickey depre and katja...forgot her last name do a lot of pieced hexies...Mickey has a website....MDQuilts, I think and so does katja, but she can be referenced via paperpieces.com too......pieced hexies are fun!

W/ epp I avoid inside corners it is to hard to get it to lay right and you have to cut the fabric to close to the edge to get a good secure point. I would do them in shapes that avoid the inside corner like this.

Can you piece them first using any shapes and then cut them into hexie shapes?

I agree with Kassaundra. Also, if you're machine piecing, I'd lower the stitch length to 1.6-1.8mm and press the seams open to reduce bulk. It's what Leah Day has done on her award-winning quilts. If you're hand sewing, that's roughly 1/16"

Can you find the shape and size here?? https://www.paperpieces.com/paper-pieces
Of course at this exact moment I cannot think of the type of triangle you need to make the finished product but I know they exist. |
