Not long ago there was a great tutorial for English Paper Piecing. Now I'm addicted and making a Grandmother's Flower Garden. I even got my friend caught up in this as well. We were talking about the best way to quilt it when we finally get ours done and we have no clue. Machine or hand? In the ditch or 1/4" in from the seams or even an allover machine pattern?

Any one of those would be fine. What ever works for you, and what ever look you are going for. I actually tied mine! I don't do well with machine quilting, and sending out can be spendy. I used to hand quilt all my quilts, but Ole Arthur Itis has come visiting, so tying works better for me. I use embrodery floss, and use a color that matches each hex. What ever you do, I know it will be beautiful.

Mine was made in around 1930. It is in pretty bad shape in some spots, but it was hand quilted 1/4" from the seams w/cream colored thread.

I do roughly the same when I hand quilt them, but not round each individual patch, I do it round the flower, and round the centre patch.
I have one to machine quilt waiting in the wings, and I intend to do a spiral in the centre of the patch, then a loop in each patch that makes up the flower. (FMQ). |
