Wow, did I learn something today. Am recovering a tabletop ironing board for a friend from work who does not have money to buy a new one. I printed out a tutorial on how to do it and they called for insulbright to use if you are using a cotton fabric for the top piece. Figured I would stop by after work and buy some. Well, at lunch, I decided to go to JoAnn's website to see how much it costs---1 yard 22" wide=$8.00 Ok, so with 40 percent off coupon, it would be $4.80 not bad. Then I thought of Hobby Lobby because it is closer---looked up their website---same width, same 1 yard=$2.99 a yard. Called both stores and the prices above are exactly what they charge. Guess you know where I went to buy it??!! Thought I would pass it on since a lot of you have been making pot holders, oven mitts and hot pads lately. Funny thing is that last time I bought it, was 1-1/2 years ago to make OSU candle matts for my daughters reception at her wedding and it was only $5.99 per year at JoAnn's

It always pays to price shop! And, yes, everything is going up and up and up...except salaries! :)

Very true!

Thanks for sharing. Sometimes those 40% off coupons can be a bit misleading. Kudos to you for going a step further and truly getting the better price. ;-)

Fktsewing:
I'd like to get more info about the ironing board. Is the Insulbright supposed to be used for the top layer? Please PM me with anymore information.
Thank you,
CruisingStef

jillnjo 04-06-2011 06:22 PM

Makes you wonder about Joanne's coupons. I use them a lot and it seems like they are really pushing them, even offering 25% off now. I think checking prices can really help.

but get this, I was going to order a bolt of Stitch witchery for a client. I went directly to my wholesale site and thought, wow, that seems higher than the last one I bought..so I went to my 2nd wholesale site..WTHECK...it was even higher....put them both on hold and gave it some thought...then for some odd reason checked the joanns website, thinking it might be cheaper to just order the 10 yards my client wants instead of the 40 yd. bolt....and typed Stitch witchery into the joann search field and what do you think popped up????

YEP...that darn BOLT of SW...and guess what, not only was it cheaper than my wholesale by about 40%, but it was on sale 50% off of that lower price...I feel like I stole it...

AND I got a coupon for flat rate shipping for $5.00...so I naturally added a few more things....total was $82 for all of it with tax & Shipping...
My wholesale cost from dist #1 would have been $87 PLUS freight!
JUST for the bolt of SW!!!

YES Virginia, it does pay to shop around!

quiltmaker 04-07-2011 01:36 AM

Yes, Ladies it does pay to shop around in these times. Amazing the price differences can be...actually astonishing at times but well worth it in the long run!

Everything seems to be that way, costs are really something! You need to check each time you want to buy.

Glad you went shopping on line before purchasing. Were they both "Insulbrite" Brand?? There is a cheaper knock off on the market (I have not used it yet).

They were like potholders sort of---used the 0 (squared on the corners) as the shape. I appliqued the red letter itself onto a white background and then appliqued the buckeye nut and leaves on it. Put insulbright on right side of the 0 with the silver part facing away from the 0 then put on the backing---stitched around leaving an opening for turning--turned and hand stitched it closed--this put the insulbright near the top facing the back of the 0---then quilted in the ditch around the outside and inside the 0. I made 35 of them and my daughter & I were lucky that we actually got one each to keep. I will locate it by this weekend and post a picture. You could easily enlarge for placemats or reduce even more for coasters. Hers were about 10 inches tall and 6 inches wide. We put them under the lit candle holders because we had plastic tableclothes for safety.

yes, they were exactly the same brand, size and everything.

I don't buy anything at JoAnn's unless I absolutely have to-which is hardly ever. I'm convinced that they're a rip off!

fabric whisperer 04-07-2011 03:01 PM

wowser, I need 5 yards of this, so thank you thank you for saving me a load! its only an extra 4 miles for HL for me
