Thanks for the heads up.

I also would have assumed that the KIT would include the pattern.

Yikes. I've never heard of any other craft just having a certain number of precut pieces without instructions. (Think model car kits, model ship kits, cross stitch kits, etc).

I'd have been livid, actually.

But then, I've never bought a quilting kit, obviously...

I haven't bought many kits but I've never seen or bought one that did not have the pattern included.

Every kit I have purchased contains the pattern. I don't think it is a "kit" without the pattern! I have had the patterns not be the same as the picture on the front of the kit package though - and of course I got the kit while I was driving through Texas and by the time I figured out the patterns for half of the stars pictured on the front of the kit were not there, I was no longer in Texas. Needless to say, that quilt had never been finished and I will never shop at that quilt shop again since when I called to ask about it, they didn't care and had no suggestions to correct the problem...just an attitude of "yeah, so what?". I don't buy kits any more now, unless it is from my LQS where I can go physically and talk to the owner if there is a problem and I know she will make it right.

Although it is not a quilt shop, the store I work at has a great register "prompt". If it is applicable, when you ring up some items, the register says, "Lid (or whatever) is sold separately". Saves on problems when you get home.

thank you for telling us this. I would have thought the pattern would be in a kit. I will read the fine print if I buy one.

we always include the pattern in kits, it is easier to take a pattern out and adjust for it unless it is a free pattern from the manufacturer

You are all kidding me!!!???!!! You buy a quilt kit and it does NOT include the pattern??

I don't buy kits, but my assumption would be that everything except the thread would be included..Wow.....

I absoutely agree with you. If I buy a model airplane kit or a model car kit, the instructions (patterns) are included with the materials in the box. If I buy balsa wood or plastic parts separately, I expect to buy the instructions separately. A quilt "kit" is no more than separate pieces of fabric in a bag with a picture on it if it does not include the pattern. Such a collection does not qualify as a "kit." I would be very hesitant to do business with a shop owner, whether a LQS or an on-line business, if the owner operates on the motto "Let the buyer beware!" froggyintexas

A lot of the bigger kits do not have the pattern. Most kits don't come with backing and batting either. Does that make it incomplete? I always read the contents to see exactly what I am getting.

Lilrain 04-07-2015 01:09 PM

I would have been very disappointed had that happened to me

I can understand backing and batting being extra. The kit should have everything you need (not counting thread and needles, which is standard) to finish the quilt top. Including the instructions and pattern. Otherwise all it is, IMO, is a "refill".
