Bias binding for round mat
I have been googling all afternoon and can't find how to calculate bias binding for a round mat.
My mat is 14 in diameter... I think I would need 44 inches of binding, so what is the best way to cut that.... what size square would I cut... does anyone have a good web site for this. Thanks Ladies. |
there is a chart for cutting bias on how much fabric is needed just put a search in for the chart

before you cut, I suggest you take your cloth tape measure and just measure around the outside of your mat.

I just made kits for a 14" round table topper, and I put 60" in each kit. I just measured around the mat, like quiltingshorttimer suggested, then added a little for an extra precaution.

Are you planning on using double fold bias or single fold? It is hard to say how big a square because some strips at the beginning and end will be short. I like to use a good size square and use 2 to 3 longer strips so there are fewer joins. OR you can look for the tutorial on making continuous bus binding in the sleeve method but I have not had good luck with that one.

The formula is pi X diameter. Pi = 3.14. So, on your case:
3.14 X 14 = 43.96 Round up to 44 and add whatever you require for overlap when joining. I'd probably cut at least 55 inches. |

The problem with that calculator is that it tells you how much binding you can get out a yard, not how much yardage you need for a specific length of binding. Of course you don't want to use a whole yard and get enough binding for a kingsize quilt. But the problem with using a square to get just the right length of bias binding is that you will wind up with lots of seams in the binding, which you probably don't want to work with on a small project.
If you have an extra yard of the binding fabric and don't mind cutting a strip diagonally from it, I would probably do just that. Assuming you're cutting a strip that is 36"x40" (bias doesn't have to be on the true 45 degree line from the selvage). You would wind up with a single strip that is probably long enough for your entire placemat. If you're willing to work with a seam or two, you could use a smaller square, but if you try to optimize your use of fabric you will wind up with lots of seams and difficulty managing the bias square.
